Any good books to read before starting A&P this fall?

I haven't taken A&P yet, but plan to take it next spring. This summer I am planning to watch a bunch of youtube videos/lectures regarding chemistry and A&P. Check out Khan Academy's human biology section.

If you learn all the names of the bones and muscles in the body, you would be way ahead of the game! Many websites can help you with that.

I would try to get a hold of the A&P text that your school uses. I know all the A&P sections at my school use the same one. That would be great if you could.

To be honest, A&P is an insane amount of work and while its not going to hurt to check out some books before the class starts I doubt it will help much. My advice is to enjoy the free time you have right now. Once class starts you'll be flooded with a ton of complicated information to learn.

I second this. I studied ahead for my A&P class over break and it really did not give me much of an edge. You have plenty of time to learn it.

It won't help you with a&p but any books by echo heron will get you psyched to be a nurse. Real life stories of her journey to become a nurse as well as others. Love those books.

I actually think that starting ahead of time could be helpful. I had a particularly difficult time keeping up with reading and studying because there was just so much to learn. I had taken an anatomy class in high school that helped me to at least have the basics down already. I'd get a book like A&P for Dummies or A&P Made Incredibly Easy. Or, an even better thought, you could get an anatomy coloring book and work through that. I had one but had no time during the semester to actually color (seriously, coloring takes a while!).

It may be a bit nerdy, but I always recommend that nursing students learn about some medical history - particularly the course of events that led us to where we are today. One of the most interesting is William Harvey and the Mechanics of the Heart (Oxford Portraits in Science): Jole Shackelford: 9780195120493: Amazon.com: Books . It is very well written - about William Harvey & how he "discovered" the mechanics of human circulation in the 17th century. He had to obtain corpses ilegally... deal with grave robbers and such.. and faced imprisonment for his 'crimes'. Sheesh, medical research today is a piece of cake.

Florence Nightengale's Notes on Nursing is also very interesting. She accomplished an astonishing amount of work despite the fact that she was agoraphobic after her Crimean experience... the big wigs had to come to her house to work with her - LOL.

I don't know about books, but I took A and P I and II and micro in 1 year. The text books for anatomy, I sarted looking through all the diagrams as soon as I got the book. Our class recommened netterman's anatomy flashcards. I would HIGHLY recommend them. I work full time while going to school and can't always have my books out at work. the flashcards cost about 25-30 new, but I got mine on ebay for about $11, from someone that used them once. I take them to work (if you buy them with the code still in it, you can also get online access to the flashcards.) the other thing I did was downlaod any free A and P podcasts to my ipod. Hope this helps.
