U.S.A. New Mexico

Published

This is my first post and I clearly have no idea what I'm doing. Sorry in advance.

Just wondering if there are any New Mexico Students hoping to get accepted to GCU for Fall..

Also if you're hoping to get into any other school.. Please feel free to jump on in too.. Doesn't seem like NM gets any action on this site..

Hi!

It is not first come first serve like CNM- it is like every other nursing application process. You take an entrance exam, the Kaplan exam and complete pre-req's. The application itself was very simple and is not online, you have to meet GPA and pre-req's requirements before you pick it up. There's also an option to turn in a resume. About 80 people apply and 40 get in. It's an excellent program. I'm waiting to hear from them if I'm accepted.

Thanks! So are the applications rated? Like the best 40/80 get in based on grades/scores? I'm not familiar with the Kaplan exam as I've only taken the HESI for CNM/UNM. I'll try to call SFCC for more info but I'm just trying to get a feel for it :)

It is more weighed on GPA and your Kaplan score. They give 1 point if you are a Santa Fe resident and 1 point if you are a CNA/EMT. I too never heard about the Kaplan- it's a new thing that they are doing. Before, they had the TEAS. The Kaplan is different from the Hesi in the sense that it is more in depth and specific. The science section is not biology and chemistry but physiology. I found the Kaplan to be harder than the hesi. Where are you applying to? I would really look into Santa Fe. If you would like, I can give you more information regarding the program and give you the nursing advisors contact info ?

I'm applying to anyone who will let me in, haha! My grades are pretty good and my HESI score is decent, so I'm hoping UNM will accept me. However, it's soooo expensive! So SFCC could be an option! I was looking at their catalog; not too much info on the program. I'm wondering also - a 55 on the Kaplan is the minimum. How does that translate to a percentage? I actually just asked a girl I went to school with who works in SF if she knows anything about the program. She said you'll get in the program if you "know someone." I hope that's not the case :(

Ha I know how that goes. Minimum for the Kaplan is a 55. It is good to get a score in the high 70's. That doesn't sound correct. I have 3 friends who applied to SF and they got in. We all come from UNM- they don't live in SF but here in ABQ so they don't know anyone at SFCC and they got in so... I guess it just depends on the person and doing research to see what program is right for them. I personally like the more hands on than textual experience. Does this friend who told you that you need to know someone to get in the program actually in the nursing program?

She's not really a "friend", just someone I know and it's not that I trust her, it's just something she said that made me worry. I've had such bad luck with CNM that i swear I have PTSD and worry about the most minute things! Thanks for the info :) If you have anything else to share I would appreciate it!

Don't let anyone scare you or discourage you! Now that CNM changed everything and it's first come first serve, it's overwhelming because it deals with being the first to go on and register.. Pure luck. One of my friends was was able to register and got in. Have you tried UNM? I applied there and didn't get in. It's ridiculous and hardly anyone gets in..

Hey everyone, thought I would see if there was anyone else who applied to GCU/ had everything rolled over for the Spring start... or am I all alone this time? :(

For everyone who has applied for GCU, did you have to take Patho 1 & 2 before applying?

Let me know!

NurseAlia,

I took Patho I and II at UNM back when UNM required Patho I be done prior to applying. So both were done when I applied. I think schools like Rio Salado have you take Patho I and II as one class worth 4 credits. As long as you have them done by the time the semester you are applying for starts, you should be good!

Thanks ApricotTea!

I'm taking Patho 1 right now and I have been told that I can't take Patho 2 until I'm in the nursing program at UNM or CNM! i really wanted to take the class that combines Patho 1 & 2 together but I heard its like $700.

Wow... even CNM is doing that now? That is crazy and kind of unfair in my opinion. I completely understand about how expensive the combined class is. I was going to retake it over the summer with Rio until I saw how much I would be paying...I promptly un-enrolled:no:. Do any of the community colleges around the state offer it as an online pre-req?
