Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

I think it's pretty well documented in this thread.

I was vaccinated as a child and my children were up until a couple years ago when I began researching the issue. I find it odd that so many nurses just go with what the CDC says and many actually haven't researched further. I decided that I don't want to have monkey or human cells, formaldehyde, and aluminum salts injected into myself or my children. If vaccines were made without cancerous agents, maybe I would feel better about it. I refuse to get the flu vaccine as well. Handwashing prevents the flu just fine. I think that it is all hype, and this year, it didn't even cover the strains going around.

There are many doctors and nurses that understand the risks related to vaccines.

Here is a journal that shows the flu isn't the deadly monster it's made out to be....Do Not Believe Everything You Read About Flu Deaths | Journal of Advanced Practice Nursing. Nursing Journals : American Society of Registered Nurses

I don't feel it's right to put others down because they don't believe in the same things as you. Many who question vaccines are highly educated people who have decided to look into something at a deeper level.

ProCon.org - Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues is a helpful site that shows arguments for both sides of the vaccine debate.

You'd better never get cancer, then. Targeted therapies have components that would blow your mind.

Please keep your unvacc. self and family away from me. I'm on chemo, so I don't need any bugs you and your family may be harboring.

FWIW, there are not two sides to this discussion. There has never been a debate that vaccinations are still far safer than the actual diseases.

You guys. I totally forgot AN doesn't have a link-back function. So just pretend I've been sitting here talking to myself. I do that a lot anyway.

Monkey cells a myth? Obviously you have not read vaccine inserts. Vaccine Ingredients and Manufacturer Information - Vaccines - ProCon.org

"Vero Cells (African Green Monkey Cells)cells derived from the kidney of a normal, adult African Green monkey in 1962 by Y. Yasumura and Y. Kawakita"

As for the formaldehyde and aluminum, I avoid it as much as possible. We are exposed to enough chemicals in our environment. I'm not going to knowingly add more to the mix.

I like how many always claim science as their reason to believe something. There is science that can prove vaccines are unsafe, and there is science that can prove vaccines are safe. It comes down to the person and what they are comfortable with. If the benefit vs. risk ratio isn't good enough, they will decline. To me, that is thoughtfully thinking about vaccination. Many just go to the doctor and do whatever they are told. When you can't sue a vaccine company for damages, a red flag goes up in my mind.

As for handwashing, yes it works! I never got the flu vac and never will. I stay at least 3 feet away from those sick and don't touch my face. If you were interested to see data, you could find it. The flu is not a scary illness. How about heart disease or cancer? Those kill more people every year than the flu ever will.

How do you stay three feet away from sick people and be a nurse? Desk job, I guess. And a far as the flu not being a "scary" illness, tell that to the millions who have died from the flu. Geez Louise, did you not have any history classes in school?

Perhaps it's the difference between a BSN and Associates degree? Or possibly age as nursing has become more evidence based recently.

I agree, it is an interesting phenomena.

No it is not...sheesh. I just have the diploma I got from my hospital program 30y ago, but I understand evidence-based practice, peer-reviewed literature, etc. Not every problem in the nursing profession is due to nurses who lack a BSN. It's also not related to age either.

Have any other stereotypes you'd like to trot out, or are we done now?

I think pharmaceuticals should be used as a last resort. I think that many ailments people have could be resolved with a simple elimination diet to find out what they are sensitive to. I think most often, diet change is enough. If not, then other things should be looked at, such as sleep, stress, labs, urine, etc. maybe more adjustments can be made. Drugs should always be a last resort in my opinion. They are expensive and often have negative side effects, and many drugs only mask the problem, they do not resolve it.

Yes, but it needs to be only an organic non-GMO apple or it won't work....;)
