Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

One of my (oh, hey, DOCTOR) friends just got shingles. And varicella encephalopathy. You know what they would have loved? TO have the motherforking varicella vaccine as a kid so they might have avoided this. Instead, they're getting weeks of infusions and a lifetime on antivirals. But hey. There was a risk of vaccine damage so

My head is also all splodey. WHO IS GOING TO CLEAN THIS MESS UP

I didn't get varicella before the vaccine. I got the vaccine BECAUSE I didn't get varicella. I'm certainly old enough that I should have caught it.

I'm disappointed that no one has posted a Thomas Dolby clip yet.

THIS. We had 2/3 of our kids at home. On purpose. We go to a craniosacral therapist for occasional adjustments. I use EO around the house now and then. We are all fully vaccinated. I work maternal-child. It's almost like it's possible to reconcile contradicting beliefs in order to do my job.

Honestly, it seems that you are so aggressively against allopathic medicine, I cannot imagine why you continue to go to your job.

And AGAIN: anecdotes do not equal data. I know someone who breathed air and she DIED. That doesn't mean air will kill you.

also: health effects. Not affects. Please. You should know this.

It's not up to us to use cherry-picked sources to try to convince patients to refuse vaccines, either, but you stated yourself that you do so. So I guess we can talk about Steve Jobs' pancreas.

Yeah, no one with a science doctorate knows how to evaluate data. TOTALLY not part of the curriculum.

It's theoretically possible that Benedict Cumberbatch or Sofia Vergara will show up at my house and whisk me away to a tropical paradise. RIGHT?

You're amazing.
