Well, as you guys know - I personally make the laws for my state. I am sure the rest of you do to. I try to go out of my way to make it as difficult and cumbersome as possible for both the parents and myself. I think it adds more to the job that way. Oh wait - no I don't - it's just what everyone thinks
The end of the first month of school has happened. I have taken a really laid back stance. The state says that kiddos need to submit a physical within 30 days of admission - i've even given a few day's grace beyond that. One of my colleagues now has a young relative in the school. I initially spoke to the relative's parent to inform them that i needed the info post haste - but there was little feedback. Then i find out there is an insurance issue and can it wait over 6 additional weeks for the insurance issue to clear up? I said no - and offered several ideas for low cost or no cost physical.
Fast forward to today. Relative comes in and gives me the paperwork i need. Was nice as anything. Still needs a vaccine, but has to wait due to shot timing. I advised that it would be fine if they had to wait an extra week until the insurance kicked in. Colleague stops me in the hall and gets nasty telling me that the physical cost her $200 because she had it done at the FastMed. And that the Doctor said I was wrong about the rules.
Excuse me?? The doctor said I was wrong about the rules of what is needed for healthcare documentation in education?? Are these the same professionals that routinely fail to realize that children coming from out of the country need varicella vaccine to start school? Or that kindergartners need DTP, polio, and an MMR after the 4th birthday? No, I deal with this day in and day out, that doctor i'll bet does probably 4 school physicals a year.
So go ahead - be annoyed at me, dear colleague. I've worked here for 4 years and in that time i've learned that you are difficult to get along with anyhow. I have no need to stay on your good side, but given the 6-8 field trip requests you dump on my desk a year (last minute, mind you) perhaps you have reason to stay on mine.
aah... i do feel a bit better now... thanks
Ah... and it is here... Today is one of my least favorite days. It's state exclusion day for my job. So any student who does not have their physical and up to date immunizations turned in cannot attend school. And despite MULTIPLE phone calls, email, face to face conversations with parents and students... I still had to send several kids home. And deal with flabbergasted or outright pissed parents. I want to scream and shake them saying "THIS IS NOT NEW INFORMATION!!!! I sent out notification in the spring. You checked a box on your kid's registration saying you understood, I sent you a letter in September, and called you 5-6 times to tell you that as of 7:40am on October 15 your kid cannot attend classes until we have the appropriate paperwork. This is STATE LAW not DISTRICT POLICY. Now **** and be a responsible adult"
To today I say "No. Just no"

I am soooo sick of people who think and act like there is a separate set of rules, just for them. Makes you wonder what the kids will be like when they are growing up with parents like that (shudder).

Funny, it doesn't make me wonder at all. 3 words. Sense of Entitlement.
Frankly, I'm over it.
This is NanaPoo's due date day at my school. The actual final day for parents to have their Immunization paperwork in is 10/30 but I tell them 10/15 so I can spend the next 2 weeks chasing the final parents around. I have 5 that haven't turned them in but only 1 of those hasn't responded saying, "I promise, it's coming."
I sent the nastygram email this morning.
Last year I was chasing ONE parent the evening of the actual final date and that parent was one of our faculty. Oh, I was burning HOT because I'd spoken to her, sent her a bazillion email reminders, only to get, "hey I'm really busy" in reply. You know, she had KIDS and a JOB and was working on her MASTERS. I'm sure none of the other 70+ parents who got their forms in on time had none of that in their life plus a bazillion other things. She ended up doing a religious exemption on the final day which I typed up for her, took to her to get signed, then took to our notary for her. Surprisingly she's no longer here on staff.

I once had a parent do a conference call with her doctor's office to try to tell me that they shouldn't be excluded from school because Hep A isn't required. Uhhhhh Hep A is now a requirement for my school district. I gave mom multiple notes home reminding her to get this shot done. Should have had it done before she got excluded.
