Annoyed -just a vent

Well, as you guys know - I personally make the laws for my state. I am sure the rest of you do to. I try to go out of my way to make it as difficult and cumbersome as possible for both the parents and myself. I think it adds more to the job that way. Oh wait - no I don't - it's just what everyone thinks

The end of the first month of school has happened. I have taken a really laid back stance. The state says that kiddos need to submit a physical within 30 days of admission - i've even given a few day's grace beyond that. One of my colleagues now has a young relative in the school. I initially spoke to the relative's parent to inform them that i needed the info post haste - but there was little feedback. Then i find out there is an insurance issue and can it wait over 6 additional weeks for the insurance issue to clear up? I said no - and offered several ideas for low cost or no cost physical.

Fast forward to today. Relative comes in and gives me the paperwork i need. Was nice as anything. Still needs a vaccine, but has to wait due to shot timing. I advised that it would be fine if they had to wait an extra week until the insurance kicked in. Colleague stops me in the hall and gets nasty telling me that the physical cost her $200 because she had it done at the FastMed. And that the Doctor said I was wrong about the rules.

Excuse me?? The doctor said I was wrong about the rules of what is needed for healthcare documentation in education?? Are these the same professionals that routinely fail to realize that children coming from out of the country need varicella vaccine to start school? Or that kindergartners need DTP, polio, and an MMR after the 4th birthday? No, I deal with this day in and day out, that doctor i'll bet does probably 4 school physicals a year.

So go ahead - be annoyed at me, dear colleague. I've worked here for 4 years and in that time i've learned that you are difficult to get along with anyhow. I have no need to stay on your good side, but given the 6-8 field trip requests you dump on my desk a year (last minute, mind you) perhaps you have reason to stay on mine.

aah... i do feel a bit better now... thanks

I'll call your mom, you can lay in my office until then.

Thank you kidzcare!

I had a legit handball eye injury (Don't ask.)

Hate eye injuries.

Eyes were my one gross one body part in nursing school. Now 3+ years as a school nurse and I am an expert at eye drops, even on the big flinchers and eye injuries no longer make me run screaming.

I will never actually like dealing with the human eye, though. Can only tolerate it :banhappy:.

Specializes in ED, School Nurse.

I've had two 911 calls in the past 6 at-school days.

#1 was a dislocated knee who wouldn't let me move her.

#2 was a fidgety, vomiting, I feel weird, might be on something, slow pupils kinda call.

#2 was in my office- this happened today. I called the secretary to let her know I was calling rescue and to send someone down to meet the ambulance outside for me. She said: "Well, we only have 1 administrator here today." Uh, ok? I asked her to overhead page a Code Blue then, so I can get teachers here quickly so the ambulance knows where to go.

So I wait. And I wait. 2-3 minutes, no Code Blue call. The ambulance is coming- base is not far away- less than a mile. The ed tech with my sick student was like, they're not calling the Code Blue?

So I call the secretary back, taking time away from my very sick and scared student. Where's my Code Blue? She says "He's on his way!! That's what you wanted, right? He's on his way!!" OK fine. Whatever. Administrator shows up in his jacket with coffee in hand. "I'll wait outside for the ambulance." You go dude! He wasn't out there 30 seconds and the ambulance arrived. Jeez people!!!

I am trying not to tell a student to shut it right now. This is a girl who almost NEVER complains, so when she came in with a migraine, I called home right away. Waiting for mom and she is mooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaningggggggg nonstop for the last 50 minutes.

I get it, not everyone expresses pain the same way, but it gets under my skin. Probably because my ex husband was (is still, probably) that way. I'm the opposite. If I'm in pain, I am silent and want everyone far away from me, no hugging, no touching, no talking.

Ahhh yes, the whiners and moaners...That's tough for me. Right along with the fake criers...Who think if they pretend to cry, I will give them a "get out of jail free" card.

I mean, yes..Sometimes crying is legit. But it's funny how we can often tell the difference.

I don't think she was faking but why carry on and on. The other students in the office staring at her and what not. She has been picked up.

On the flip side of this coin, I will not hesitate to point out inconsistencies to a kid who I think is faking it. Like a kid who was moaning and carrying on and then a parent says they will pick up. Then the 30 minute wait in my office is the kid gabbing and laughing with no sign of the debilitating nausea that they came in with :/
