Im so friggen annoyed, I studied so hard, stayed after with my teacher prior to the test and she even layed it out what was gonna be on the test- i studied and i know everything thoroughly, i take thorough deatlied notes, read, and learn, not memorize the information....and i only got a 77- two points above failing! ***!!!!im so friggen aggrivated, the problem is the test questions. I thought i did so well, like in the mid to high 80's. I dont get it! How do you prepare for these NCLEX style questions? because i do practice questions on the cd that comes with the book, the ones at the end of the book- im in tears right now because no matter what i do- its not good enough and obviously im missing out on something! I need to have a 75 to continue in school- i have 2 tests left, and then the final in a couple of weeks...(5tests in all- and i have a 77% final grade) I assume our average of the tests is 50% and the final is 50%-but if im just making the mark on these, then its gonna be the same way on the final, even though i am just tryin to take this one test at a time. I mean i got an 81 on the first test and i didnt even really study, i missed 5 lecture hours....im so discouraged. Can anyone tell me what it is that i am missing

see the weblinks on https://allnurses.com/forums/f50/looking-test-taking-stratagies-224581.html - looking for test taking strategies. review the questions you are getting wrong on your tests and why you are choosing the wrong answers.

The only thing I have found that helps me at all with the NCLEX style questions is to practice NCLEX type questions. I do the ones in our texts as well as from books I own.

you're not alone my dear..i definitely need help too..i thought somehow i was doing good already especially during my review for nclex..i was doing exactly the same thing that you did..yet i also failed..but time to wake up..it isn't over yet..it just means what we gave obviously is still not enough..we have to focus more altho i myslef dont know where to start..let's not loose hope and start trusting wholly to God and ask for wisdom and strength..im gonna start reviewing again for my next take and what i will do is that i'll focus on those areas where i think im weak at..dont stop practicin till we get average of 80 or probably 90? let's aim high.easier said than done i know but let's know He has purpose for everything..
Thanks.................
Good luck to you

i can tell you that i am currently a first year, second semester nursing student and our test are nclex based too. the way that i get through the test is first by underlining what the question is asking for. once i have done that, then i got through the answers and mark out which ones i know aren't correct. then that leaves (hopefully) 2 that are potentially right. then at that point, you just have to think about which one is the better answer.
hope that helps! :nuke:

Yeah, this seems to be a common theme! I am not doing as well as I'd like either, but I found a couple things that help...
There is SO much info. that our teachers give us, and a million ways that it can be presented in test questions that studying the "right" way is like saying we have to be mind readers. (That's probably why NANDA uses the word "alterations" instead of deviations, permutations, combinations, etc.!!!:))
But one thing I found helps is to take a deep breath and really focus on the main things that the teacher mentions in class, do some research (NCLEX books, internet, whatever I can get my hands on about a topic and see what stuff jumps out from all my resources that is the SAME or that is repeated... not just the stuff that I like to read about or that already makes sense to me. Usually, I have found that the teachers are stressing something because we will need to know info. about it, and in order for me to make sense of their little game, I try to see what other resourses are stressing and compare it to what is stressed in class. Whenever there is a repeat of info, I make a note, or even a mental note. Sometimes even 2 exposures to a topic will help in making important connections on tests. Good luck everyone!!!

I am in the 4th semester, hoping to graduate in May (finally)!
I can tell you that you cannot miss a 5 hour lecture, what are you thinking. also, you mentioned you did not study for a test?? You MUST study!! Develop study habits that work for you. Nursing school is tough, and it takes alot of work. Do not give up, but attend lectures, and study!! I can honestly say, I never miss school, unless I am dying! I am proud to say I have a 3.7 GPA, and I am getting an A so far in Adv. Clinicals.
good luck, and keep on studying.
Yeah, I forgot to mention that class attendance is crucial. *giggle* If I miss class, I miss the important nursing interventions and important examples the teacher gives that often jog my memory for test questions. Oh yeah, one more thing. Look for stuff that is the SAME about the (renal disorders for example) and then look for things that are different... often the things that are different are what we get tested on (hypokalemia and hyperkalemia= dysrhythmias, only hyperkalemia is associated with cramps, etc). Does that make sense?

All nursing has its root in Med-Surg, basic assessment skills, etc.
You must be able to pass this for any type of nursing you choose to go into as a speciality.
First, you need to read the question carefully.
DO NOT hurry !
Calm down.
Think about what you would do FIRST.
Remember your ABC,s always start with them.
Think about the previous test you took and focus on studying the way the questions were asked.
Form a study group with others in your class and maybe have faculty advisor.
