ANNOYED! HELP!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Okay I need to vent. I recently graduated nursing school and passed boards. I am an RN. I took a job in a LTC facility in my area so I can do RN to MSN online. I work per diem, but I do work at least 30 hours a week. I am constantly hounded with questions from full time people on how to do things, when to do things, why to do things, I want to say you are full time you should know!!!!!!!!!! It comes to the point where I feel like im being short with people, because sometimes I think they ask me because they want me to do it and they want to "watch". I am newer to the facility and its like some people are just CLUELESS! Its like everything I do they want to know what im doing can they watch me so they can learn? Learn what? Didnt you go to school too? I thought maybe they wanted to make sure I was doing things right because I am new, but no, def not the case. Some people generally just do not know the procedure for how to do things properly. I like helping others out and teaching but when its common nsg practice and its over and over and over again I start to get annoyed. I feel like its the young nurse eatting the older nurse but I cant help it.Okay I needed to vent... THANKS!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you are being manipulated and you have figured it out. I would get very, very busy doing my own assignment or turn it around on them. Tell them you would be happy to watch and give them honest feedback. It will eventually occur to them that they can't get you to do their work any longer and they will bother you less.

i felt like i was being "tested" a lot by older nurses when i was new. they would ask me to do things that they could do, should do, (i.e. had time to do) etc., but would ask me to do and most of the time they KNEW it was something i hadn't done before or hadn't done a lot of. some of the things i had done, but i knew it was things they thought i might not be familiar with. i felt like you though. a lot of the things i did know how to do and had done several times, but it was like they weren't sure if i knew how so they'd go out of their way to ask me to do it. there's one nurse in particular who will still say, "did you....X..." because she KNOWS i haven't done it and knows i probably don't know that i'm supposed to (which is why i haven't). it's very frustrating.

Im just frustrated. Like oh you are fall charting? Im not sure how to do that all can I watch? when they are full time. I work all the shifts so Im familiar with how the charting goes, but how do they not know? I stood up and said I dont need an audience you can do the charting. They wanna gossip and mingle while orders need put in because they know I'll do them because theyll say "oh you're faster anyways". COME ON! I def needed to vent today lol. Its like they leave things to the end of the shift because they know I will just end up doing it. The pay is good where I work, I just need to formulate a plan that will allow me to do my work and others to do THEIR work.

I thought that was it for awhile. Then I realized that they really just didnt know what to do. Someone isnt voiding. Should we straight cath? well is there an order? do we need to call for order? Did you palpate bladder?. There are steps to go about doing. Its like every little thing is a question and if they cant find me theyll call a supervisor to help them.

Yes, I can understand your annoyance. Some people in this type of situation may also feel just a bit little "special"? They might even feel a little more superior.

I know I would, and I do, sometimes. It's times like this I have to remember that I'm merely a Link in the Chain. And the best thing I can be is a Strong Link.

Thats a great way to look at it to be a strong link. I dont feel superior though, I feel like the interruptions will make me make an error. I dont feel like I have enough experience or confidence yet.

I'm just wondering why anyone would need to know 'what to do' in a LTC working environment. What r they doing there if they don't know what to do?

I would tell the NUM/CN/DON and ask them to make more training available.

Gee- if I didn't feel superior- like I could do these tasks when others couldn't, and feared making an error, then the feeling I would have would not be one of annoyance. It would be one of, well, fear.

THEN, with fear being the motivational factor, I would have to not put my Patient care abilities on a Priority Focus Status. I would not want to jeopardize Patient Care or my Good Standing as a Nurse.

So. if I were in Your Shoes, I would have to Prioritize, Focus on my Duties and Responsibilities, and assist my Colleagues in meeting Their Needs after I had fulfilled My Own.

Its very strange that they arent sure of the steps to take in situations. It makes me wonder because I know I had a good orientation experience maybe they did not? I def focus on my work I just feel bad basically telling them to ask someone else. However, on a ligher note :) NURSING IS AWESOME, and into my first year it feels great to be a nurse!

If they work there full time, and have been there a long time, believe me, they know what to do and how to do it. Anything you do for a period of time, you become proficient in. Especially long tem care, which is mastered by time management and organizational skills. Policy and procedure is basically the same everywhere, LTC nurses are easily able to go from facility to facility with no problems. Specific tasks are no different and after a few months in a long term facility, there basically is nothing, you can't do.

They are testing you. You are a new grad and there is no way, you know their job better than them. I don't care if you went to school for 10 years, they are able right now, to work rings around you. So don't get it twisted. They may be messing with you, but "right now", they know more than you and they know they do. Is there any chance you are bringing a know it all attitude, or a "I am superior to you attitude?" Just a question, I have no idea what is happening there, but from the two or three post written by you on this subject, you seem bent on stating, "they don't know what you know." Peace!

It's like, it's like, it's like. Well, is it LIKE something else or is it the real thing?

Sorry, I just have a problem with how young people say "like" all the time. ;)

I think you've answered your own question. you feel taken advantage of and don't really want to keep that going. Right? Or have I missed something?

To be sure what is really going on, why not just ask them?
