Hi. I just started a UM position at Aetna. It's only my second day so I'm not sure what's ahead of me. I applied for a position as a healthcare referral nurse at Andrews Air Force base about a month ago and got a call yesterday that they would like to hire me to start 9/30. It pays more. Both jobs are Mon-Fri, no weekends/holidays. Aetna is closer to my home and Andrews is about 40 min away. Not sure what to do??????

I would keep the job you got and tell ANdrews that you have accepted another position and would love to be considered for their position if a chance arises in the future.
They will appreciate your honesty and loyalty and you can put in there again some time.

The surrounding areas are terrible and the traffic is awful. Don't know I 40mins means you are 30 miles or so away but you definitely add time to that commute. Th base was nice and well taken care of. I enjoyed my time there but absolutely loathed the surrounding area.

Benefits for being a federal employee are pretty awesome... consider if putting up with the other factors is worth that.
I live in Virginia, out near Dulles.

I live near Dulles too and the commute to Andrews every day would be a deal-breaker for me. Freeway traffic is horrible in both directions. Tack on an extra hour during your evening commute.
Is it that bad??? I'm new to the area.....
It can be. Traffic is crazy sometimes. I was a very angry person when I live there and it was the traffic. Set my mood for the day. People in those areas tend to be less friendly as well. That's why I choose to to live in a small town in North Carolina. No traffic and people are very friendly.

That is not a commute I would be doing 5 days a week...unless you have a strong desire to work in the military, I would keep your job with Aetna

OP in another post expressed her desire to work with the military...
OP, I thought you took the position at Walter Reed??? Just curious in your progress.
I did. You have a good memory ladyfree28! I'm still waiting for my clearance to go through. I never wanted aetna but I've been out of work for about a month (moving from Illinois to Virginia) so I took the job at aetna. I'm only 3 days in and absolute can't stand it. I feel attached to a headset. I miss face to face interaction with patients. I initially applied for the job at Andrews but the recruiter was told they wanted to hire someone within. She contacted me and said the position was still available if I wanted it. With the schedule @ Andrews, I can work both Walter reed & Andrews!

Yeah...I understand the whole "insurance is not my thing", lol... When you are cleared for the position, tell Aetna gracefully that it's not a good fit. I'm sure they'll understand. :)
