I've asked my staff numerous times to call me before sending a student down.
Despite there, there are a handful who just will not do it. Either their phone is broken (unlikely since I can call in), or their hand is.
I get an email today: "We need to work out a different schedule for ______________ for his headache meds. It's really disrupting class for him to leave".
I replied: I haven't seen __________ in weeks. Call me to discuss.
So where has he been going and how often is he going somewhere else. Is someone else giving him meds- if so, I'm gonna go off the wall mad.

:yeah:Seems to me someone is playing the teacher. I am very fortunate most of my teachers call me at the elementary level, however it is when they get to high school that we seem to have problems. My advice is to sit down with the teacher and explain that this is the reason you ask for them to call and then to sit down with said student and teacher to find out what is going on and where they have been going. Do you have a secretary that can give meds or an aide, if so check to see if they have been medicating him. This is why sometimes I feel like I should have become a Private Detective.LOL

My teachers use clinic passes, and if the child does not have one I send them back to get one. The teacher has to write the time they send the child, and I sign it and write the time I send them back. I have told them that if my initials are not on it, I did not see the child. There is one or two that I still watch carefully when they leave my office to make sure they find their way back to class.
I needed this laugh today. As much as it makes me mad, I get this bad sense of satisfaction when a student gets busted trying to break the rules. I'll be calling him down tomorrow to find out where is he going, make sure he isn't getting medicine from someone else, and then forwarding the e-mail on to the principal.

I have this issues with quite a few teachers. The students have passbooks that are supposed to be signed from the teacher before they can come to the nurses office. However, only a third of the students actually make it with passes. We discussed this at the last teachers meeting and I am to send back any student who comes down non-emergently without a signed passbook. I'm not very good at this because I'm so used to them bombarding my office that I forget to look. But it is a welcomed change and maybe it'll stop some from coming down uneccisarily!

I have the same problem!
When I first started in my school, I told the principal that I will not any student with out a note from the teacher unless ofcourse it is an emergency. Principal agreed. I sent out memos to all the teachers, elementary to high school. But I still get students that come to me with out notes. When I question them as to why they dont have a note they tell me thing like "my teacher doesn't have time to write a note" I send them back to class to get me a note and some of them get frustrated and write Check him/her I have no time to write notes. I mean what are they doing brain surgery, come on:banghead:

i see it all of the time. it really gets to me as well. over the years, i have lost a lot of respect for "bully" teachers.

I never worked in a district that required passes to come see the nurse.
I am thinking about all the kids who come by and would not want a teacher to ask why they were there, why they wanted to see me.
Can a student see you before or after school without a note? When you send them away, how many come back?
Many times the students dont come back. There are quite a few students that are often kicked out of class for misbehaving and they think that they can hang out in my room. I know because I am on the same floor as where a lot of the elementary classes are and I can here the teachersyell at then and 2 minutes later they come to me.

Had that happen where I used to work. I would copy the passes and put copies in every mailbox every Friday, even cut them up for their convenience. What would happen?
"My teacher said she wasn't writing no note for this"
And back to class they'd go. (Well, most of the time, anyway)
Had a few arrogant, belligerant, holier-than-thou types come beelining down the hall, and we had a Come-to-Jesus, but they found out that just because I was 24 years old (at the time), new, and looked like an eighth grader, did not mean that I'd just bend over.
That first year was heck. Good thing I'm Irish-German, or I'd have never made it. There are times when getting the temper and the stubborn from both sides is a blessing.

Yes, they are free to see me before/after school, during their lunch, and during class change. If I were in the elem. school, I would probably just ask that they call first (since I cover more than one school and I might not be in the office). At the high school level, I've found a lot of these kids think we were born yesterday and think they can slip a lot of stuff by us. A lot of them will use the school nurse as an excuse to go roam the school and then return to class without a note. I've made it clear from the beginning that if a student returns to class without a note and tells them they've been in my office, to call me and verify. Only once did that happen where I forgot to write a note, the other times they were skipping.

I usually don't require a note all the time. Yes its convient at times, however most kids come to me with out a pass. The only time I make students get a note is if they don't check in with their teacher first thing in the morning. Students have been marked absent just because they came to the HR before their teacher was able to take attendance.
