    Irresponsible Parents

No, unfortunately there is no hand book that they have to sign. They should have some common sense though! As per my supervisor If the parents refuse to pick up a child with a fever or one who puking then I should notify them that I am to call paramedics. Maybe that will get them moving.

    Irresponsible Parents

I don't usually send kids home unless they are puking or have a fever and of course unless they have some injury that needs to evaluated by an MD. I am a working mother of 4 kids. If the school calls me and tells me that my child has a fever I am out the door in 5 minutes to pick him/her up. I have mothers tell me that they cant come in because they have a little baby at home. SO! bundle him up and put him in the car OR have a neighbor watch him while you go to pick up your other baby. I just dont buy what some of them say to avoid coming in. In our city we are not allowed to administer Tylenol or motrin to the students. If that were the case then I would not be so hard on the parents.

And that's why I ask you to call...

Many times the students dont come back. There are quite a few students that are often kicked out of class for misbehaving and they think that they can hang out in my room. I know because I am on the same floor as where a lot of the elementary classes are and I can here the teachersyell at then and 2 minutes later they come to me.

    Antibiotic cream...

The health department does not allow us to apply any creams, oinments, etc. Therefore I don't keep it in my medical room. Sometimes I have smarty pants students come and ask me for some bacitracin or neosporin and when I tell them I don't there response is "well, whats the nurse here for then" UGH so annoying

I have the same problem! When I first started in my school, I told the principal that I will not any student with out a note from the teacher unless ofcourse it is an emergency. Principal agreed. I sent out memos to all the teachers, elementary to high school. But I still get students that come to me with out notes. When I question them as to why they dont have a note they tell me thing like "my teacher doesn't have time to write a note" I send them back to class to get me a note and some of them get frustrated and write Check him/her I have no time to write notes. I mean what are they doing brain surgery, come on:banghead:

    Irresponsible Parents

I have been a school nurse for the past 6 months, and I have come to find that some parents are so irresponsible and ignorant. I have students that come to me with fevers 101, and more sometimes feeling really lousy. I call the parents up and there responce is she can stay the day and I'll take care of it when she gets home. Hello! There is still half a day and the student goes home on the school bus. by the time she gets home her temp will be up the roof. Parents response "dont make a panic, she'll be fine, it's happened before" What would you fellow nurses do in a situation like this. This is just and example one one case but I get theses a lot. Possible sprained ankles, stomach virus, etc. Yesturday was my most frustrating day :banghead:because I had to deal with more than one case like this. One mother tells me that her child cried last night for three hours thats why he has a fever today. Oh yeh the best one I have heard yet was "just let her stay with you all day" I am not a babysitter. Come and get your kid!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I just started the orientation for the school nurse position. It seems like there is so much paperwork that needs to be filled out. Any NYC nurses that can tell me what is there day like? how much paperwork do you actually have to take care of?Any one who works in private school?

The salary is average, but the schedule is great, medical benefits are for the entire family. Where is Gatham Agency and what do they pay?

I waited a couple of months before they replied. I think that if you find a school that needs a nurse you can have them write a letter to DOH stating that they are interested in you and that should speed things up

    newly hired school nurse

Hi everyone, I passed my interview two weeks ago, was offered a job. They told me that in NYC it takes a couple of weeks for someone to get in touch with me to get fingerprinted, a few weeks of orientation, then only i can start working. Anyone working as a school nurse in NYC know how the process usually works? Thanks
