Anatomy and Physiology

Published

Okay guys I need some serious help. I am taking anatomy and physiology in the summer(8 weeks) My first ever lab class. I got 94/100 in lecture test 1 and I got a straight D on the lab test. I studied hard and I felt I knew everything. I'm a little dissapointed but I am set on getting a B in the class. Getting an A is nearly impossible now :( I'm on the bones and I need tips to ace this lab. I need tips to ace this class. I just don't trust my studying ways. Anybody wanna pitch in. CNA class was way too easy. No wonder I got an A. This? Im taking Human growth and development and I'm getting A's and its not really getting in the way. But I start psychology today and I'm scared it might be too much right now. I'm 18 by the way and was homeschooled all my life...

Amen! I was homeschooled and I'm proud of it! You have been given many wonderful opportunities and are blessed to have the ability to do something many people don't have the freedom to do.

I know I am very happy to be homeschooled. Reading and comprehension are one of my strongest skills. I think I did good on lecture because I'm a detail thinker and I love words. Images don't really stick to a name with me unless I know the details about that object. :) I don't know. I need to find my studying niche.

Thank you. You guys are awesome. I've been doing flash cards and trying to visit the lab. I'm trying to manage my time between two other classes. My goal is to memorize 20 bone/bone spaces, foramens, etc a day. I can't do it today because I have a online class exam close to being due. I just have to learn to pace myself and calm down.

When I took A&P I did have to study differently for lab. Lab required me to recognize a lot of photographs and labels...you know, lab stuff. Some things that were in my lecture text were not discussed in my lab text. If you have CD-ROMs, PPTs, and textbook websites use them. Do those bonus questions if they are offered!

Here are some sites you can use:

don't waste time making your flashcards when there are some online made already! You want to know the material and with just 8 weeks...you don't have time to hand do them. If you were in a regular semester yes.

Couple of thoughts:

First, "divide et impera" - take a look at what you're studying, and concentrate on what you don't already know. For example - if you already know what a femur is, then check it off & move on to patella, etc. Don't waste your time concentrating on what you already know. What also helped for me was to look at how the pieces interrelate - again, associating the rectus femoris muscle with the femur helped a bunch - knowing that rectus femoris was also part of the quadriceps muscle group told me that the vastus medialis, vastus intermedius & vastus lateralis muscles were in the same general area. 4 muscles & 1 bone down, just by knowing how things interrelate.

Second, don't get too bummed if you do poorly on one exam - I just finished A&P lab 4 weeks ago and I got a 63% on the second exam; finished the class with an 89.6% for an A-. So, yes, it can be done - not easily, but it can happen.

I had a study group that helped me tremendously! We spent time in the lab quizzing each other, and they brought to my attention the areas I was weak in. One person got a D on her first exam and then joined the group and ended the semester with an A. Good luck!

Study groups are an excellent way to do it if everyone in the group needs help with the same areas. They can also be a distraction. I had a 3.97 science gpa by reading and re-reading things several times. Repetition was key for me.

What online school are you going to?

Hey, first thing, we Home School our kids :-) I loved A&P lab so learning all the muscles and bones was a snap. However, there are several websites out there just to help you learn the parts of the human anatomy. Many of them quiz you by allowing you to label the parts, then it grades you on how you did. It's been a little while since I took A&P lab, but I recall making up phrases to help me recall the name of a bone or muscle. It can be anything you come with to help jog your memory while testing. This is real useful when learning bones in the hands or feet. Good Luck!

The nursing school you apply will accept online classes. None of them at Northern California do! Where are you located may I ask? You are so lucky!!!!
