My school requires taking A&P1 before starting nursing unless you're coming right out of high school...don't see how it matters. I definitely recommend taking it beforehand. I took 1&2 before starting nursing and so glad I did. I know a few that took them with nursing and really struggled. Just study your a&& off! Good luck!
I am scared about the workload - I wish I would have taken it in advance too. Hopefully I don't end up a struggler! I have absolutely no medical experience whatsoever so I feel like I'm at a double disadvantage. I guess the only good thing is that I don't work and only have my husband and furrykids to take care of, so I won't have to juggle as much as some people do.
This happened to me too. I thought I'd get in a lot later than I actually did, and didn't have the science sequence started. Most of the others were done!
In my experience you will not be disadvantaged from a nursing perspective too much. You will need to get a jump start on some basic things though...especially the heart and how it works, and the lungs.
Taking anatomy while doing nursing classes is not bad. It's the physiology that KILLS!!! Anatomy is a lot of memorization and point and shoot. Physiology requires a lot of time to understand concepts. So my advice is not to worry until next quarter.
I am right there with ya! Same thing happenned to me. I am worried about it as well. Everyone that I know has taken it already, and it is recommended to have it done before you start your nursing classes. And here I am. I do not have them done, and I have no medical background whatsoever. I feel like you, I feel like I am behind. I know that it can be done, I just have to push myself to do it. I also have a two year old daughter, and alot of family stuff going on (my dad has terminal cancer) so I am just hoping that I will be able to pull it off. It is going to be tough, but I do have alot of support. I am also way determined to succeed at this for myself, my daughter and my father. Good luck to you! We should be buddies on here to help each other through. It is nice to know that I am not the only one.
When you know you are at a disadvantage, you know you have to come up with a strategy to beat this problem. You will have to be more organized, more motivated, and work that much harder to make this work. Good stategy, I found, was getting up a couple of hours early in the morning to study when there were no distractions. I got more good studying done at 4 am, than I ever did at midnight. Just a suggestion.
I took A&P I and Fundamentals of Nursing concurrently during my first semester, and A&P II and Med-Surg during my second semester... Though it was difficult, it is definitely doable! I would highly recommend starting or joining study groups, or tutoring (my school offered it for free).
Though it is intimidating and a lot of work, it was great to have fresh A&P knowledge while taking nursing... Good luck!!
For our BSN-PL program, it is acceptable to not have completed A/PII. It's listed as a first semester class for the accelerated track.
As it is, I am currently taking Micro and A/PII (and that's all) and am finding it to be a bit of a load. Not undoable or anything but the classes and study styles are somewhat similar, and with labs it's even more of a slog.
So, it's definitely doable. A/P is one of those classes that is usually very intensive and requires a great deal of study for most people.
I certainly wish you the best, but I am also glad that I'll have it all done and out of the way by the time I start NURS classes.
AddiesMom - I would love to be buddies on here. It would be nice to have someone to talk with! I'm sorry about your dad's cancer . I have anxiety/panic problems so I'm a little bit scared about how I'll do with all of the stress of so much intensive work - but I'm hoping I'll be too focused and busy to freak out and panic about it all.
I guess they key to success it seems like is study daily and work our booties off! :) Good luck to everyone in the same boat!

Did anyone else take Anatomy I while they were starting their Nursing program? I've taken all my pre reqs besides A&P I - but at orientation it seemed like many had already taken that class.
I planned to take it as a summer class - but I kept hearing how bad the chances of anyone getting in were, even with a good GPA. So I decided to just enjoy my summer and stretch out classes part time through the year. You can imagine my surprise when I got accepted on my first try!
I am scared I'll be at a disadvantage since I won't have that knowledge while going through clincals, ect. What do you all think?
