Anatomy & Physiology (1 and 2) + Microbiology = SUMMER

Published

so i plan to take anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 and microbiology during this summer.

ap1: mon-thurs 8:00am-12:45pm (06/06/2011-0710/2011)

ap2: mon-thurs 12:45pm-5:30pm (07/11/2011-08/14/2011)

microbiology: 5:30pm-10:15pm (06/06/2011-8/14/2011)

my question is: is this a smart move on my part? i am trying to make sure i am done with the 3 classes so i can take the teas (for ut medical branch) and the hesi (for ut houston nursing school). and in order for me to make the deadline of the fall 2012 nursing program at utmb, i must send my application in between (november 15, 2011 - january 15, 2012). so i figured that i should take ap1, ap2, and micro over the summer in order for me to be ready for the two nursing entrance exams. then i would be only taking (human development and growth, chem. lab, philosophy, and biology 1) in the fall 2011. either way i must take ap1 during the summer because i don't want to be behind; if i do not take ap1 in the summer then i would have to take ap1 in the fall 2011 and then ap2 in spring 2012, setting me back on taking the nursing entrance exams.

now what i can do is: switch another class out with microbiology; that way i can lessen the load during the summer and then take my nursing entrance exams when i am done with my fall 2011 semester.

p.s. i have already taken nutrition, chemistry, statistics, and intro to sociology. along with the basics: gov't 1&2, english 1&2, art history (visual and performing arts), and intro to psychology.

here is the link for the nursing prequisites of ut houston nursing school. the prerequisites are almost identical to that of utmb. http://registrar.uth.tmc.edu/admissions/prereqtransferbsn.pdf

all advice is appreciated it,

Don't you need to finish Chem prior to taking Micro? Also, Bio before A&P?

If not and if you are not working, and don't mind missing on your Summer fun, then the classes seem doable. It will be intense, but it can be done.

I have already taken Chem this past spring semester. For some reason, I do not see any prereqs needed for taking A&P.

Did you take the courses spread out? what would you recommend on doing?

It depends on you and if you are trying to work FT while in school. The schedule you have described is only two classes at a time. Even if you take into consideration that the classes are the equivalent of four classes during a normal semester, it shouldn't strain you if you aren't working, or working minimally.

That is CRAZY!!! I definitely would not take those three classes in the summer. Each one in its own is incredibly demanding even for a full semester.

Are you nuts?:D

One A&P class with micro alone is bad enough, but both? And over the summer?

Also I know it's been awhile, but doesn't one normally have to complete A&PI before taking A&PII? I mean one builds off the other, or perhaps it really has been that long.

To the OP, you do realise there will be labs for each class. That means not only making sure none of the three lecture classes conflict, but sorting out the lab portions as well.

Being as all this may, if you feel you have the academic chops to pull this off, then by all means knock yourself out.:D As others have said, you will have *NO* life this summer and also very little wiggle room if something throws a wrench in your schedule.

It takes some kind of special person to take the sciences during a summer session, much less three classes at once.

Seriously, I don't see this as a big deal. It's only 2 days per week for A&P, and though the OP didn't specify, probably only 1 day a week for Micro. Plus with the number of hours that were posted for each class, that schedule must already include lab. That's definitely doable, especially if he/she is not working at all.

I think it might be doable in ideal circumstances but if it were me I wouldn't want to set myself up to do poorly. I don't see how you could truly get the most out of each class doing them all together, never mind that it's over the summer. I'd save a and p two for fall at least. Or if you can do the a and p classes together take micro in the fall.

I'm not sure that everyone is understanding that A&P I and II are scheduled to be taken consecutively and not concurrently...

I don't know if others noticed, but the OP stated that A&P1 starts June 6th and goes to July 10, and A&P2 starts July 11 and goes till August 14th. They would not be taking all 3 at once; rather, 2 at a time. Do-able.

OP, I took Micro over the summer to get it out of the way between nursing classes, and it worked out quite well. I was at the school twice a week, and we had lecture for 2 hours and then lab for 2 hours. It was shorter than a regular semester, and I loved it. And I was working 2 jobs at the time. So I think you should be able to pull it off, especially as by the sounds of it you do at least somewhat well at school to begin with. :)

Be careful not to over-do-it...

Consecutively or not....that will be a complete nightmare! The Anatomy and Phys books are huge..and so much of it you have to know like it's your best friend. It took me a year to complete Anatomy and Phys I and II and I still occasionally review on my own. When you get to Pathophysiology--you'll need to be solid on your AP. You could be the most amazing student in the world and get A's on all of the summer exams, and come out with an A in the courses, but I am a true believer in pacing. Don't rush these classes. Microbio and Chem, as annoying as they are ... really necessary to take your time with as well. You don't want to simply memorize in AP...it will bite you later on ---Just my opinion...I care about my fellow Nurses-to-be :)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't know anyone who could absorb...and really really absorb the anatomy and inner workings of EVERY body system, do dissections, and be able to thoroughly explain in detail the physiology in 3 months...while taking other classes-- Yow!

If you decide to do this...try downloading audio from itunes on different systems... that really helped me a lot.

Best of luck, and hope all goes well!!!

This is all well and good, but seriously, if the OP can't handle these two classes at one time going to school only three days per week, how is he/she going to handle nursing school???
