An Associates Degree Isn't A Real Nursing Degree...Vent!!

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

HI ALL...

LET ME START BY SAYING THAT I GRADUATED THIS PAST THURSDAY FROM SCHOOL!!! HIP HIP HOORAY:yeah:!!!

NOW I NEED TO VENT AND I THOUGHT IF ANYONE COULD UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THIS TOPIC IT WOULD BE YOU GUYS/GIRLS HERE ON ALLNURSES.COM (AND ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE NEW GRADS LIKE I AM). SO TODAY I FIND OUT MY AUNT (WHO IS CURRENTLY IN SCHOOL GETTING HER BSN) TELLS MY GRANDMOTHER THAT I (WITH AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN NURSING) DO NOT HAVE A REAL NURSING DEGREE, AND THAT I HAVE TO GO BACK FOR MY BSN!!! I SERIOUSLY THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HIT THE ROOF WHEN I HEARD THIS:scrying:! NOW I ALREADY HOLD A BA IN ANOTHER SUBJECT, AND BECAUSE OF THAT I CAN START MY MASTERS DEGREE RIGHT AWAY (I HAVE ALREADY LOOKED INTO THAT AND CONTACTED SCHOOLS).

BUT THE IGNORANCE ON HER PART TO TELL SOMEONE THAT I DO NOT HAVE A REAL DEGREE IN NURSING AFTER I BUSTED MY BUTT WITH TESTS, CLINICALS, CARE PLANS, ETC FOR 2 YEARS WAS A REAL KICK IN THE BUTT!! I AM SO ANGRY!! NOW I DID STRAIGHTEN OUT MY GRANDMOTHER'S CONFUSION, AND MY DAD THINKS SHE MIGHT BE TALKING THIS WAY BC OF PLAIN IGNORANCE BUT ALSO BC OF JEALOUSY.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? ARE YOU AS APPALED AS I AM? HAVE YOU EVER COME ACROSS PEOPLE WHO FELT THIS WAY?

ANY WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD BE HELPFUL BC I AM STILL PRETTY DEVASTATED OVER HERE EVEN THOUGH I KNOW I HAVE A REAL DEGREE AND ONCE I TAKE AND PASS MY BOARDS I WILL BE A REAL NURSE WORKING IN A REAL HOSPITAL.

THANKS FOR LISTENING,

SUZANNE :)

Straight BSN students think they are smarter than 2 yr RN students for some reason... before everyone beats me up, hear me out, I got my RN, then went for my RN to BSN completion. i worked as a RN for 2 yrs before I started my BSN program and worked full time going through my BSN program. I had to take some classes with traditional BSN students. Talk about some snobbish people.

I kept to myself in those classes, because my experience as a combat medic and a RN didnt really matter to them, but every once in a while, I would sign my name and , RN after ... something that they could not do. you learn everything in the 2 yr RN program that you do in the 4 yr program minus some administrative and so called management classes, I had to take a patho and assestment class, I learned as a good review from the physical exam class and to be honest, I could have taught the patho class. but I kept my mouth shut and didnt raise my hand and went with the flow, so as you graduate with your ASN, send your nice aunt a card and sign it with your name and, RN after...

my 2 cents

I'm a BSN student and no, I don't think I'm smarter than anyone.

I'll admit, I am a "degree snob", but she is still wrong..

You take the same NCLEX she does, you will do the same work that she does.

.....and when you are done you'll still have one MORE degree than she does.

I think it's jealousy b/c you get to bypass the BSN requirement and go straight for your Masters.

First congratulations on passing nursing school! I also have an ADN, but honestly in hospitals, we're still all RNs regardless if you had a BSN or hospital degree. I mean we all took the same NCLEX. Don't let this get to you. There is really no difference. I plan on getting a BSN, but I'm also proud that I am RN with a ADN. At least I saved some money, and not had to pay for a 4 year school.

Hi Everyone,

Wow...thank you for all of your responses! You have really made me feel better about myself and my degree! I especially like the comment about sending my aunt a card with the initials RN after my name...LOL!

But in all seriousness, we do take the same boards and we will perform the same tasks once we get on the floor. I know i busted my butt to get where I am today and I am proud of my accomplishment and degree!

I haven't confronted my aunt as of yet, but i plan to (in a non-attacking way) just so she knows that I know what she said and how she feels. And to hopefully shed some light on the subject that my degree in nursing is a REAL one!

Hugs,

Suzanne :heartbeat

Well the only difference between you and her, is one community health class.

And you should show everyone your "real" license!

The fact that this subject is still, after all these years, a live controversy with lots of threads devoted to it is a pointer to what is wrong with nursing. I'm a BSN grad, and there is value to the broader education that comes with it, just as there is value to each of the routes to becoming an RN. Those who claim that the way to get more respect for nurses is to make us get higher degrees - some even proposing a Masters as the entry level degree - are totally out to lunch. The way to get more respect for nurses is for nurses to band together and demand that respect - and the financial rewards that go with it. W have at least two major crises in health care in this country. A deep and growing shortage of nurses and over 45 million Americans with no health insurance (millions more with inadequate coverage) Let's talk about solutions to those problems, not try to divide each other by fighting over degrees. Once we get those problems solved, then we might start to talk about re-vamping nursing education. But right now, that's not even in the top ten list of problems to solve.

Welcome to the profession and congrats on finishing your schooling!

CONGRATS...I think she is just JEALOUSY

Really? Just one class? :chuckle

FA,

You took the words right out of my mouth!

FA,

You took the words right out of my mouth!

I've heard that it's just one class to get the MSN from BSN too--probably some fluff class!

I'll alert Georgetown! Their CRNA program is 72 whopping credits. I feel totally ripped off.
