Care must be taken in handling nasal and bronchial secretions of a patient with bacterial pneumonia primarily because:
A: suctioning is contraindicated in patients with pneumonia
B: the secretions may be highly contagious.
This question was on my exam. I chose A obviously correct answer was B. I know secretions are contagious but for some reason I thought suctioning wasn't suppose to be done with pneumonia due to bacteria spreading other places while taking suctioning out and I thought they wanted people with pneumonia to cough it out themselves. I was wondering if I'm a total dumbass and read the answer wrong or if there was some backup to why I answered A. Please help!! If you have any articles or websites backing up my answer please list.
NEVER forget this. The teacher is ALWAYS right. Arguing with teachers will cause unnecessary hardships to student. I learned this early on when I was a nursing student. My classmates caught on eventually and some did not. Those who did not learn this failed the clinicals because they were assigned hard patients.
The answer is in the question folks. Answer A doesn't even make sense in relation to the question. B is the obvious answer. It is very necessary in the ICU to suction patients with pneumonia if their SP02 isThis exactly.
BTW, OP if you aren't an LPN or RN you can't use Nurse in your user name from what I understand.

They can use nurse as part of the username if clarified with something along the lines of "ToBe" or "Future"
OP, it's about prudent patient care. If a patient is unable to clear their own respiratory secretions, suctioning is the correct action to take. Proper PPE and hand hygiene would be the care to be taken.

I am at a loss as to what your question is.
As you point out, the obvious answer is B.
I am not sure anybody
I wouldn't argue this one with your instructor. Sorry! Take is as a lesson in reading the question carefully: This is a question about what you, the nurse, need to do to protect yourself from the secretions. This is not a question about proper care of a patient with pneumonia, or the benefits of coughing/deep breathing vs. nasotracheal suctioning. Those are important topics, but this question is not about them. Notice that "suction" isn't even included in the question--for all you know, the patient could be coughing them out and spitting them on the bed linen.

nursemjanney did you really argue with your teacher over this? I don't think anyone can give you articles to back up your wrong answer because it was just wrong. if you don't suction a patient who cannot clear his own secretions the rest of his care doesn't matter because he died from having his airway obstructed!!
