Alverno DEMSN 2021

Updated:   Published

I've recently been conditionally admitted to Alverno's demsn program, slated for Summer unless a spot opens up in Spring. The conditional being that I finish the labs for the prerequisites and two psychology courses as I've only finished the didactic portions in a marathon 9 week section.

Does anyone have any experience with this program, or Alverno in general? Any advice would be much appreciated.

That annoying and sucks. What about Pharm this semester? Are quizzes included?

I honestly don’t remember but I’m pretty sure it was 80% tests 80% overall like all nursing classes. I didn’t find that class to be too terrible.

Pay a LOT of attention in pathophysiology. Watch lectures twice if you can get ahold of recordings. You will thank yourself later. It is foundational to everything else and will prove absolutely essential for picking up new material quickly.

katoo,

Yes, that is true. Lots of people in my cohort failed classes and either dropped out of the program or were held back, and I think the same will be true for this semester. A lot of people have been failing the advanced skills exams.

I think if you were only focused on passing assessments, you might not learn as much as you think. It is rare I say anything nice about this program, but I do think some of the projects, particularly the ones you do independently, can reinforce material well if you put effort into completing them.

I really don't recall for pharm. I think she might included some of the case studies in the final grade, but check your syllabus or ask the professor directly if you're still unclear.

Wait, you're saying for Pharm, it's 80% overall grade right ? The reason why I asked is because some students said the 80% is the average for the 4 assessments, which doesn't include quizes, and projects. So, it doesn't matter if we got an average of 90% on the other assignments, they won't count it. I've nevwr heard something like that before! All the nursing programs I know request an average of 80% to pass each class, which include quizzes and homework....but, the people in this school do whatever they want, while we don't get much information when we asked questions. Or, they just ignored our emails.

@Katoo I definitely read the email to quickly LOL. I saw one MSN class for that semester and got exited. We don’t start classes until the 30th so I’ve just been working on completing the orientation requirements.

I emailed one of my professors 4 times to have a zoom meeting w. That professor never replied! I emailed after 1st, 2nd, and 3rd assessment! I emailed this morning too....Nada. I'm just going to drop this class. It's a bunch of nonsense while I'm paying all this money....to get what? Ignored? My laptop is out of memory right now by downloading all these stuff they put on Moodle.

They lied to me about tuition. They told me the tuition was 52k before I got accepted.....One month after starting the program, someone said the program tuition increased while I NEVER received a (n) letter/email about it. I'm justngoing to drop this class and transfer.

@KeyzLocs good luck. You'll see what we're going through. LOL

@greenbluegray, our Pharm prof this semester is a man. I saw an email that was sent today about dropping classes before finals.....So, if we drop a class, does it mean that we're dropping out of the program? The thing is, nobody from that school want to answer your question. That's what pissed me off.

No, you can drop a class without dropping out of the program but you will be held back to repeat it. For example, the people that failed our complex clients class in semester 3 are currently repeating it while taking 3 of the 5 classes for semester 4. So they will graduate a semester later. I also think you can maybe only drop 2 classes throughout your time in the DEMSN, but I don't know if that is true.

And yes, I would agree that most of the professors are terrible at answering emails. What class did you need to drop? Do you have a phone number for that professor or can you attend their office hours?

I live out of State. By the time I move to WI, we'll be done with finals. I was trying to schedule during office hours but, via zoom...since, I'm not in WI yet.

From my perspective as a nursing professor, it is rare currently in nursing programs for the minimal passing grade to include anything besides the exams. After the passing grade is met (for Alverno and most schools at  78-80%) homework can be added. The rationale is that adding 'homework' into the minimal passing grade could allow a student to pass a course without meeting the minimal requirement of  course related knowledge, and theoretically allow a student to fail each or a good portion of the tests and still pass course/program with serious knowledge/testing deficits.

I know I don’t want someone who can’t cut an 80% handling my heparin or insulin. Just saying.
