Alverno DEMSN 2021

Updated:   Published

I've recently been conditionally admitted to Alverno's demsn program, slated for Summer unless a spot opens up in Spring. The conditional being that I finish the labs for the prerequisites and two psychology courses as I've only finished the didactic portions in a marathon 9 week section.

Does anyone have any experience with this program, or Alverno in general? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know if we'll be able to take the NCLEX once we finish the BSN portion of classes? I just received the class structure for the program and I see that we start MSN classes the third semester.

Yes for future cohorts, no for the Covid cohorts. Admin changed that on us mid-program because of the lack of clinical hours.

@damiorifice Thanks for the quick reply! I hope that the fall cohort isn't affected, I'd like to start working as soon as I can to help with school cost.

Don’t count on anything they told you holding. They lie and break promises left and right. Most recently they made the decision to assign block scheduling and remove any control over our schedules. For those of use with kids this has proven a real expensive nightmare.

@damiorificeOh my!! For the price of this school, I hate to hear that. They seem a little frazzled as we're still waiting on information to be released. I also have a son so I know the importance of everything aligning perfectly. Fingers crossed it all works out for both of us in the end!!

@damiorifice right. It's like we're kindergarten kids. I'm just so ready to transfer to another school. I want to graduate and start working but, it's like they're failing us.

@KeyzLocs Are you sure we start the MSN program on the 3rd semester ? I thought it was 4th semester though. I'll double check. I was working when she sent it last night. How are you doing with Patho and Pharm ?

Wow, crazy that all the bad things I said about this program a few months ago turned out to be true… Who would have thought?! ?

keyzlocs, I wouldn’t count on taking your NCLEX while still in school. You are not going to have time the prepare if you are a full time student. You may pass the predictor exam and be registered as eligible to sit, but I wouldn’t recommend it without a lot of extra studying outside of school. The NCLEX is expensive and you probably don’t want to have to take it more than once.

Also, you probably won’t have much time to work. Most in my cohort quit working early in the 3rd semester, and the ones that haven’t are always very stressed.

Honestly, everything was great until there was a change in leadership.

Or maybe until you spent more than a mere 4 weeks enrolled? ? Anyway... good luck to all the new students! Hope your experiences are better than mine!

Honestly, that’s my one complaint. Everyone else has been pretty cool.

@greenbluegray, you and @Damiorifice better not start it again. ?

@greenbluegray, is it true if your average grade for assessments isn't 80%, but your average for everything else for thay class is 80-100%, you still fail the class ? What's the point on making us take quizzes every week, do project when these grades don't even count toward our final grades ??? We could focus more on the assessments and practice questions to pass these assessments, rather than wasting our time. They're just failing us.

Yeah. But some Professors take artistic liberties with that 80%. Excluding the lowest score, or including quizzes. There is some buffer on some of the classes. Then again, some of them it’s two exams and you better hope to God you get 80%. I think it’s unpleasant but manageable. Plus with time a lot of the knowledge becomes reinforced and you can use deductive patho-physiological reasoning.
