hello, vettech! it is good to see "our" men! good luck in your classes. when will you begin your clinicals? let us know how you and school is going!

actually, i'm still working on prereqs. i'm not in nursing school just yet. however, in a way i do clinicals 40 hrs a week, just on a different species.

2nd week of classes and I'm still not sure how to make the material workable for testing.

There are 2 kinds of information bases. One group of skills will be practiced with a sort of active critical thinking called "psychomotor skills" by repetition. The head-to-toe assessment,for instance,requires a combination of sequenced actions to memorize along with thier verbal communications. The assessment we witnessed as an example of the skill set was about 45 minuets long:eek: . The reasons for all the nuances of those tests were covered also,as was the medical terminology.

The lecture portion covered A&P of those systems and a whole bunch of other crap I never remember seeing in the text assigned. Tecnique and sequence of taking a HX and some infection control along with handwashing check-off.

What I thought we would cover in the first semester,we just slammed through in the first week................I think.

The course guide recommends 60 hours a week devotion to the course......................................I don't believe that's a typo now. I think it would help if we could access some of this from our home computers,but the bulk of my weeks will now be spent in the computer lab taking tests over and over and trying to get a spot in the skills pratice lab.

It's all just a matter of figuring out what i'll be tested on and what is fluff.

hello, peeps! as always, it is good to see you. i think with so much material to cover, the first test will give a better understanding on how to "study", at least this is what i am counting on :). all the best to you.

Way to go guys! I think more males are needed in nursing. I, of course, do have some advice. Get a thick skin, especially for OB/Gyn. There will be staff/male doctors who will object/give you grief etc. We all know that it shouldn't be a problem but... sometimes there are. Stand up and get your instructors to stand up for you.

OB/GYN will be no problem if you present your self correctly and have a good supportive instructor. mine was great look where i am at today:)

one hint for male students-- never introduce yourself as a male nursing student and do not let others do it either. I would go in an introduce my self like this" hi my name is Mark I will be your nurse for today is that ok"

oh and i usually took a minute to talk to them before blerting out the question. just relax and act professional and confident at all times. good luck to alll especially you "MALE " nursing students.

Yes,that's how I look at the gender thing at this point. If I strive for excellence and always conduct myself in a professional manner and don't show fear/insecurity as in other socialy akward situations,then what do I have to worry about?

The difficult part will be mustering any interest in OB/GYN and pretending that it's special to me. :chuckle

UMM, Mark. I see you are being nice and helpful but a warning to the male nursing students be careful about that and ask your instructor first. Some nursing schools won't let you say I am going to be your nurse today. Like my school will NOT allow that. We have to identify ourselves as nursing students and for very good reasons too.

This nursing student who happens to be male is doing good!! Having a great time this summer and am getting to that point where I'm almost ready to hit the grindstone in school again. :)

I have one year left of an ADN program here in the Seattle area and clinical this next quarter will be in psych and advanced med/surg. It's supposed to be the hardest quarter but that's what they said about last quarter and I made it!

I am receiving grants now for this next year which I'm utterly pleased about; I can now JUST worry about my studies!!

There are two other guys in my class and we're all good friends. The girls in the classes are really protective of us and we have a blast!

Hello to all our men around here! It's good to see more of you going into nursing. I just graduated with one of the finest men I've ever met in my nursing program...very caring, sweet and incredibly smart! He will definitely be an asset to any place he works for.

So far I haven't met any male nursing students yet in my school. Well I'm only doing the science pre-req for now. But I hope some will pop up by next year! Keep the good work up guys!
