Depends on what kind of nurse you want to be.

from my experience, there are a lot of factors that determine the time it will take you. Where will you be applying?, do they have a wait list?, what type of program do you want to enter?
Personally, I started my prereqs in 2003, only taking one class a semester and working full time. I finished up sometime in early 2008 and applied in fall 2008. Because of the california budget crisis and shortage of faculty, I will have waited 2 years by the time I start in fall 2010...then another 2 years to complete my ADN...so by 2012 I will be graduating (totalling 9 years!)

Well if you want an ADN two years and it helps if you take a few summer classes. I dont recommend taking the sciences over the summer unless you have the time to really study. Science classes during the summer are more intense. Four years for a BSN. A BSN is worth it though. Also you are NOT too old. 30 is young. I have seen people in their 40s/50s go back for a nursing degree. Make sure you research programs in your state to make sure you are getting your moneys worth. Good luck.
I agree! It is a heck of a long time...I want to become a nurse and I am not letting other obstacles in life stop me...no matter how long it takes I will one day become and RN!!!

an associate's degree takes 2 years and bachelor's degree takes 4 years, 2 yrs prereqs and 2 yrs upper level. There are people 50+ in my BSN program I am in you are NOT old. lol

I would plan 3 years for an ADN. (Generally MN schools tend to require all prerequisites are finished before entering NS.)
5 years for a BSN.
(3/4 to FT attendance)
First step I would take is identify the 2-3 schools you are interested in attending.
Second, set up a meeting with a prenursing adviser.
Third go to the meeting with your transcripts. Find out what classes will be credited and that will help you make your plan to achieve your goals.

I started when I was 45. I already had a Bach in EE so I didn't have to worry about some of the pre-reqs. I took 2 pre-reqs per term (3 terms/yr) and it took a 1.33 yrs to do the pre-reqs. I was accepted to the ADN program but there is 1 term between applying and beginning. Four terms later.....I graduate in Aug. I am 48.
Go for it regardless. Even if it takes longer....you will eventually get there.

I am starting an LPN program in the fall which is 1 year no prerequisites and then I am going to do an LPN to Rn program which is an additional year. So 2 years for my RN

Have you checked out your school of choice to see how many pre-reqs they require, when you can apply, waiting lists?
Where I go you need 12 core classes + you have to be well versed in Algebra, Chemistry and basic Bio or you have to take those over again. So for me that is 15 classes just to put in an application. Once you are accepted the program is full time 2 years.
I know many people who have been trying to knock out the pre-req's and nobody I know has been able to get all A's going full time. They just end up taking the classes over again because you need all A's to get in the program.
I would say at least 2 -3 years of pre-req's , then another 2-3 years for the program with the lag between the application and the begining of the program. So thats about 6 years in all if you are able to stay on track and everything goes perfectly.
