You are a person who knows why we fight everyday to practice the profession properly. Meeting the emotional needs of people helps them get better. When nurses are so busy they can't give emotional support patients are more likely to die. The accountants think the time we spend listening to people's fears or putting a hand on a shoulder is wasted. They want us hanging IVs and blood all day with no time for the thing that is the core of the profession. Have no fear, we will fight on to practice nursing in the way the manisfest human values not monetary ones.

I just wanted to share something... Sometimes I think it might become easy to get caught up in some of the negativity of nursing, I have a story for whatever it is worth-- that I want to share with you. I was dx with metastatic thy. cancer when I was 31. Went thought 4 surgeries, external radiation, feeding tubes, etc. basically 3 years of excrutiating treatment often wondering if there was any way that I would make it.. The one thing that stands out in my mind was how overwhelmingly caring and compassionate the nursing staff at the various hospitals/treatment centers seemed. I can honestly say I do not know if there was anyway that I could have made it without their encouragement. From a patient's stand point I stood in awe of the nursing profession. I admire what nurses are able to do despite of their working conditions. I was an accountant at the time, making pretty decent more, I promised myself that if I ever made it, I would go into the profession that had made such a difference in my life. So here I am, I am in my second semester in RN school and just hope and pray I can be half the person to someone that many nurses were to me. Nurses hold an incredible power to change someone's life.
