AIr force reserve rank

Published

Can someone shed some light on a subject for me? According to the packet being prepared by my recruiter, I would be at 0-4. (I have been a nurse a LONG! time). However, I don't read about anyone entering on these boards as anything but an 0-1 or 0-2. Does the selection board put all reserve nurses in at this level?

Thanks!

She hasn't responded to my email or my phone calls! I have feeling that she knows I'm ticked and is avoiding me. I suppose if I email her, maybe that would get a response.

Did the contract state you where going to be a O-3 or did it say per AF form # whatever. Depending on how it is written will depend what you will be able to do about it. See about talking with a JAG officer (lawyer) since there is a possible breech of contract. Sometimes people will interpet a regulation one way and the JAG officer can give you the proper reading of the regulation. Good luck

Everything says Capt. (O3). However I did talk to the head of the Healthcare Reserve Recruiters today and they are sending the form to the Head Nurse for approval, once it comes back (hopefully approved) then I will remain a Capt. (and I will not have to swear in again), because everything calculated out to an O3. Then my appointment orders can be cut! So now I'm just praying that the turn around can be quick. HAHAHA, I know things do not move quickly. I did however tell the Head of the Recruiters that it takes me a while but now I am officially angry, not just frustrated with this whole process.

Okay, so I heard from my recruiter today, the head nurse reviewed my work history and states that I remain an O2. Rank has not really mattered to me, it just that in Oct. they said I was coming in as a Major, then in Dec. I was informed that I would be coming in as a Captain, no problem, then I Take my Oath on Jan 9th as a Captain, everthing signed was O3. Then my recruiter turns everything in for my appointment orders and they say that my rank is incorrect and won't give my appoinment orders. I contacted the Chief of all Healthcare reserve recruiters to get his assistance with this, I heard back from him on Fri. as well as my recruiter and her boss, they were reviewing my form 24 and sending it back to the head nurse (who signed my prior paperwork as O3 previously). I am 6 months from going in as a Captain, however if I go in now I will have Captain in 1 yr., plus I would be trained and useful to my Unit upon Activation in Jan 2011 versus just barely getting training done. If I fight this and hold them to contract, fighting might take a year and therefore I would then need an age waiver and have lost out on a year toward military retirement. So does anybody have any suggestions? If I decide to take O2 I will re-swear in on Friday.

Tough call. It seems to me that the recruiter should have known the system better and that just years of nursing did not translate to rank. That being said, I would think that you are stuck...if you take it, you get O3 in a year, if you want it sooner, you can get the 6 months of experience in the civilian world and then come in at O3. Either way, I think you got the raw end just because you were led to believe that you would come in at a higher rank.

Whatever you decide, it will be intensely personal...and nobody else needs to ever know if you decide to stay or go. Try not to be bitter, though I understand your frustration...you should have never been told that you would come in as a major, and they should never have sworn you in as a captain without having the final word. Good luck, and I for one hope that you stay.

The biggest frustration is that the office that needed to cut my appointment orders was the same office that put together my oath etc. I do plan on staying, I was never hung up on rank, I want to serve my country and repay all the men and women that have allowed me to do everything that I have been able to do in my career! Did you get into March COT?

I did. I'm looking forward to it. Hope to see you there, or in the future!

Recruiters are definitely not always the swiftest folks in the world, and in their defense, they're not always given correct guidance and for the life of me I can't figure out why. I'm glad to see you're staying, I'm proud to have you serving with me, and think of it this way - it gives you a chance to roll your eyes, smile and say, "Tell me about it!" when one of your enlisted troops says his or her recruiter lied! LOL....

On a serious note, it stinks - but I wish I was getting Captain in a year! I got a year's time in grade, so I'll make First Lt this December and then Captain in December 2012, but O3 in a year would be awesome. I still say you got the shaft and it's your recruiter's fault, and at the very least they owe you an apology (which you may or may not get). Don't let it turn you against the blue, though - the Air Force does a lot for its people even in the midst of the mistakes it makes.

Hi....Just wanted to add my :twocents: (smile)

When I went from RC to AC I went in as 0-3 , I took the Oath as an 0-3 at my first AD duty station....Was 0-3 for one month then something about my paperwork was all jacked up soooo.....I had to re-take the Oath as an 0-2. Took almost one year for the paperwork to get corrected and follow me but that retroactive pay was SWEET! Smile

I must say it is very rare for anyone to come into the Army Nurse Corps as 0-4 but I guess Air Force is a wee bit different! Also sux that you were coming in as an 0-3 and now you swear in as 0-2. Six months will "fly" by (pun intended, ha ha)

Good luck to you and Congratulations

It's a different career field, but we had a doc in my COT class who came in as a Lt Col.

Felt sorry for her a lot of the time because a lot of military style leadership stuff was expected of her that she of course had no clue about. We all thought she was sort of hung out there to flap in the breeze on her own; we all helped her out as much as we could.

I don't mind being a 2nd Lt - it's going to give me time to get my master's done and then start worrying about other stuff I need to do to make rank, like Squadron Officer's School as a captain, without having to cram two master's into the four years to the major's board in 2016.

Sort of stinks, though - coming in at the bottom of the totem pole (again!) when I left as a junior NCO...ha ha ha ha....but hey, the view's good looking up!

:crying2:New frustration now! The day I swore in again (Feb 12, 2010) as a 1st Lt. I also swore in with one of my friends! She recieved her notice to come to UTA for March on this past Saturday! I have recieved nothing, called my recruiter and found out this afternoon that I may have my orders cut tomorrow. The problem is that They had to ungain me and then regain me in order to cut my orders, however now I may not make it to March UTA, I may have to wait until April UTA! This bites, I am officially ticked. The worst thing is that I don't know who to yell at! Is it really that big of a process to ungain and gain somebody? It's all computerized isn't it?
