Air Force October 2010

Published

Just wondering who all has/is submitting their application for the October due date for the AF for the up and coming boards?

Specializes in ICU/CCU.

Enough with the niceties, I'm in full-on freak-out mode! There is no plan-b, just the leftover crap that I've been using to tell friends and family as to why I'm leaving. I've built this up so much that I've unintentionally squashed the rest of the "at home" opportunities. My job,m house, car, family, all that...I have already convinced myself that this civilian life is for the birds and the USAF is the only way for me. I can't think about the possibility of not getting in, it'll drive me nuts! Not to mention, I'm one of the 'tards going for ICU...

God help me.

Specializes in OR/Trauma/Surgery/CriticalCare.

@dangerous...lol, You crack me up. Youre definitely living up to your name. As much as I want to do the same and tell some select peeps to f-off and burn bridges I don't want to cross back on, I was particularly careful not to do so for this reason. But, that's me. There's nothing wrong with freaking out, but dude you were confident enough to do that...don't lose your head now. A few more weeks we'll find out and you can sit back and laugh about it. Either way, you still have your license and things can always be far worse, at least your still being considered and got this far. We are all really feeling your chest pain right now, your just adding the impending doom part on your own. Its all a big question mark for all of us and It's never too late for a plan B... Hopefully we'll all be in the same COT class so we can call each other out! and laugh about this. Being on these boards is definitely a sign of our shared anxiety....

Specializes in ER, ICU, Med/Surg.

I feel your pain Danegerous! It is going to be a loooong month! I am trying for one of the emergency department positions. I am hoping the busy flu season will keep me preoccupied until December!

Specializes in Critical care.

I feel the same way danegerous! I'm also one who's waiting for the results and an ICU position! I really want to join but to wait until the end of this month is going to drive me crazy!! I'm so determined to leave the civilian life and become an military nurse.. Fingers crossed everyone!! I wish everyone and myself best of luck on this journey!!

hi! mine is in the mix too! last i heard there were about 200 applicants with 15 total slots for fully qualified nurses(including 3 critical care slots). now my recruiter has informed me it is even less and only one critical care nurse. it seems like it will be really tough to get selected :-(. has anyone heard how long the board meets, ie..are they there all week, month, etc. my recruiter said the release date for results is around thanksgiving. has anyone considered any plan b's? i had not until i heard how tough it is, now i am thinking i better make a plan b-lol

my recruiter said the same thing, but did mention two mental health spots in the 15. he also seems to believe the board for new grads will be cancelled next year. i guess they filled too many spots and are cutting way back to allow the dust to settle.

I'm in the mix, too! My recruiter called to notify me that my papers are offically being reviewed now and we should know something shortly (she stated within about 2 weeks was her guess). I'm scared and excited like you all are. I'm nervous. I want this badly, too. I'm going for one of the ICU spots and have been a nurse for 16 yrs with the last 6 in Telemetry and very recently MICU. I've been told that we should be looking forward to a January(ish) COT date depending on need and such. It's all up in the air. grrrrr! Dangerous cracked me up with their comments! I felt very simular in many ways to that! LOL... I'm hoping those comments about only few spots are not correct and that we all stand a great chance! I'm 37...so don't have many more chances to do this. I got a late start:) Much luck to everyone and we should stay in touch for the results of this month's pick!:yeah:

i would not get my hopes up for jan. unless you mean of 2012.

Yes, my recruiter said the same about them adding two mental health spots. Apparently they took in too many nurse for fiscal year 2010 and ended up "banking" a bunch for 2011. AFPC (Air Force Personnel Center) had originally anticipated hiring 290 nurses for fiscal year 2011 and that has been cut to 130. So with the cut in the number they are hiring and the ones already obtained last year....my recruiter has said it is extremely tough. I hope we ALL get in!!! Good luck to everyone!!!

Board is supposed to be done with their selections by Thanksgiving and we should know sometime after Thanksgiving, but before xmas. I started this process in March 2009!! Due to a not so great recruiter, I didn't make boards last year, so have been waiting. All of my packet was complete by xmas of last year (with a different recruiter), but since they only do one board for "qualified" applicants, I had to wait to submit until now. My packet was sent to the board in September. It's hard to have any kind of plan B when there aren't any positions available. I have applied to thousands of positions over the last few years and have not had any luck. I have applied for NICU/OB and really hope to get selected this year. I really don't want to wait another year. I decided that I wanted to go back in to the military in Spring 2008 and have been working really hard to make this happen. Jobs basically do not exist for nurses where I live. I am doing post-NICU Pediatric Home Health because I can not gain employment anywhere else. My hours and days are not guaranteed, pay is not that great, no benefits (no vacation time, no health insurance, etc)!! My family and I have been ready to go for over a year, even though we too would have to sell our house in this not so great market! I hope that all of these rumors of few positions being available due to last years applicant abundance are not true and that all of us will finally get to do what we have been wanting to do. Good luck to all!!

Hey everyone! I hate to intrude on a conversation, but I'm in bit of a turmoil and I wanted to get some insight. I am graduating this December with my BSN and I'm working on my packet for the Air Force Nurse corps. I met with my recruiter finally a month ago and he said I could get my stuff in for the Feb boards. I already have a bulk of my paper work done, license, BLS card, birth cert, ssn, professional evals, all the paper work he had me sign in the office, the questionnaire, and 9 page information application. The only thing I am lacking is my anticipated graduation verification (which I will get this week). He told me when I talked to him last that we would schedule an MEP by December. Only problem is I'm having some difficulty getting a hold of him right now. I emailed him all my scanned documents, the dates I can go to MEP and he never responded. I left messages on his phone, never called back. Finally, I called his cell yesterday and he answered saying he got my stuff and that he would call me today about my physical. Well, I got no phone call. I'm frustrated because I never realized what a long process this was until I started reading your all's posts. Do you think he is ignoring me for a reason? I was told by another AF nurse that she got an email saying they were putting the recruitment pipeline (whatever that means lol) on hold for Fiscal year 2011. Does that mean they have cancelled boards? I already knew they had cut back on boards and the number of applicants they would accept due to the over census last year, but I wondered if this was new news. Does anyone have any insight for me. After I get all my paper work in and my physical what else do I need to make sure my Recruiter does? I'm nervous he won't push my packet if I don't stay on him. Sorry this is so scattered. I'm just nervous there won't be a board anymore (maybe that's why he's avoiding me?) , and if there is still one I won't make it in time. Thank you all!

Katarific.. My guess, and this is just a guess, is that they are waiting to see if they fill all their positions with the current board that is now in session. They started November 2 and finish November 26. My recruiter had told me that they may or may not have a February board depending on the results of this current board. My recruiter also told me that there are definitely more people applying than there are positions available:( However, even with all that being said, if there is not February board, there will still have to be a 2012 board in the fall of 2011. Several people who have there packet at this board started way before 2010! If you are sure this is what you want, commit yourself to the wait and try to keep busy in the meantime!

As a new grad it is going to be extremely difficult to get into the Air Force. The recruiter that I have been working with flat out told me they may not have a board next year for NTP (Nurse Transition Program) nurses. Luckily, I started a job the beginning of September, so I am getting experience while I wait for boards, which makes my packet look better. I would not put all your eggs in one basket and expect to get in, at least right away since boards seem to be pushed back or cancelled all the time now. So if you can, be looking for a full-time RN position to strengthen your packet and experience. As far as recruiting goes, the recruiters have been partially assigned to other recruiting duties, such as recruiting experienced nurses who are interested in obtaining an advanced degree, or those who already possess an advanced degree.
