Graduate UK nurse making move to USA

Hi,

I'm a graduate trained as an adult nurse in the UK! I currently have a job on an acute medical assessment ward and I'm looking at moving the USA in approx 1 year.

I spoke to a London based agency and they have advised me to apply to the CGFNS for credentials evaluation and apply to take my NCLEX.

They then told me to give them a call when the above is completed, and they contact hospitals/agencies in the USA to secure me a contract and visa!

I asked about making up of theory/practice hours and I was advised he has never come across a british adult trained nurse who has had any major issues with the credentials part. He did mention he had a woman who needed 20 hours extra mental health nursing, but was able to use her learning disabilities placement hours to cover this also.

Has anyone here made the move to the USA as a UK trained adult nurse and if so, how has the process been for you?

Specializes in Critical Care and ED.

I made the move to the US in 2003. I was a diploma nurse trained in 1989 just before Project 2000, so luckily I had all the required hours. At the time, the US were begging for UK nurses, but despite that it still took me nearly 3 years to get here. When I hear nurses saying they hope to be in the States this time next year, I can't help but think that is an unrealistic timeline. Things have really changed and not for the better, so I can't imagine it would take less time than I took to get there. However, I can recommend those still interested in emigrating to check out the agency I used...O'Grady-Peyton International. I'm sure they must have figured out the logistic hoops by now as they specialize in this. Perhaps they might be able to offer advice.

Hi, new to the group and looking to make the move to the US/Canada down the line when I qualify.

How did you get on with it, did it all work out or are you still nursing in the UK?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Both US and Canada require transcripts to show Obstetrics, Paeds, Mental Health and Adult clinical and theory hours. There are plenty of threads discussing both USA and Canada and for Canada look up threads discussing NNAS

Specializes in ER.

If you read other threads on this subject, its pretty much impossible now for a UK trained nurse to move to the US. Unless you qualified pre 2000, your UK adult branch training doesn't meet the requirements.

I think that it's easier to meet the requirements of the US if you did your nurse training before 2000 or did the Project 2000.We did 18 months foundation and then 18 months in your speciality so met the practical and college hours needed in each area.

Hello

What is the update with ur application? Have u tried Florida, NY or Oregon?

Did anyone end up doing this course ?

I've read through the pages of info in this thread. Can anyone offer advice, we moved to the USA from the UK 9 years ago. We are USA citzens now, my daughter returned to the UK for a 3 year nursing degree, halfway through her first year. Shes thought she just needed to take the NCLEX once she graduates to transfer her nursing degree to the USA. I am ready its not just that simple. Its necessary to have hour in Paed, mental health etc., and it seems reading this thread, many of you were short when applying. I am also concerned she needs 2 years practicing as a RN before you can apply. Does anyone in the UK have experience of applying to the USA straight from graduating? I found the KIngs College, that look like they offer courses to make up the hours. Any experience would be great. We are located in NY and will not have the visa SSN number hurdles other International applicants have.

She will not need work experience to apply but NY have their own way of assessing transcripts and generally do require hours but a lot depends on how transcripts are completed

Hey Nurses,

I have just received my ATT from NY BON and it feels so good

This is how i got the approval. I have always wanted to move to the States ever since i qualified few years ago but i never got round to doing anything about it. But late last year, i finally decided to start the process. I looked for an agency who was willing to employ me and help me with the process.

My application was sent directly by the agency to NYBON early November with 1f form , my university sent my transcripts with a 2F form directly to NY and NMC sent the verification of license to NY via online. This is a faster process compare to using CGFNS. There was a bit of a delay with my application because NMC has a new process in place but NY wasn't aware of this so NY kept asking for a paper copy of the verification. I had to keep calling NYBON to relate this new process to them. Eventually NY accepted the verification via online. Few weeks laters i received my approval letter via email.

I am glad i did not give up because a lot of people in this forum stated that UK trained nurses do not have the required hours to qualify for Nclex. Although i did a 2 week mental health placement but never did a placement in Gynea, labour or peads ward. But my transcript did include 75 hours of peads and OBs cos i did few weeks placement in ANE and i had the opportunity to care for children and pregnant women.

Awesome well done :) :) do you mind if I ask what agency you are using as a lot of agencies are trying to send people to less popular states? Obviously your agency was agreeable to letting you pick the state of your choice yes? :)

I am with medpro
