Graduate UK nurse making move to USA

Hi,

I'm a graduate trained as an adult nurse in the UK! I currently have a job on an acute medical assessment ward and I'm looking at moving the USA in approx 1 year.

I spoke to a London based agency and they have advised me to apply to the CGFNS for credentials evaluation and apply to take my NCLEX.

They then told me to give them a call when the above is completed, and they contact hospitals/agencies in the USA to secure me a contract and visa!

I asked about making up of theory/practice hours and I was advised he has never come across a british adult trained nurse who has had any major issues with the credentials part. He did mention he had a woman who needed 20 hours extra mental health nursing, but was able to use her learning disabilities placement hours to cover this also.

Has anyone here made the move to the USA as a UK trained adult nurse and if so, how has the process been for you?

Hy everyone, I am trying to apply as a nurse to go to USAwith no success so far!! I have been trying to find out how can I top up 15 hours theory and 45hours clinical practice in areas of paed, mental health , obstetrics, as I am a qualified adult nurse in uk . I contacted the NMC and they don't have any idea how to do this. Also contacted universities and they don't know about any course to top up this areas. Any of you have came across with this and how did you do it ? I would really appreciate any help as I can't do the nclex exam if I don't have this in my transcript thanks in advance

Firstly, the NMC aren't going to help you. Its not in their interests to assist NHS trained nurses to move overseas.

Secondly, most of the UK nurses here in the US are older and trained pre P2K. We did equal amounts of time in all 4 branches, we are generalists and considered employable in the US.

Your 2 options are to go back to school and do the remaining 3 branches, or obtain a study visa and do RN training again in the US.

This is an expensive option, most American grads have study debts in excess of $200K.

But you still need all 4 branches to apply.

Hey thanks for your response. How did you applied for New York? With an agency??

You could try OGP, I think they are the only agency still accepting UK nurses.

But there isn't a nursing shortage. The other agencies all quit because there are plenty of nurses now, and no need to import any more.

Hiw did you do the 4 branches?

Via agency but you can apply yourself online call them they are very helpful

Hello, Nurseedeeva I am just now gonna start my Bsc adult nursing in a University and I would really like your help on what to do in order to have enough theory and clinical hours to be able to move to the USA once I become a nurse. Please sent me a private message as I can’t for some reason, your help would really be appreciated ?

US nurses are generalists. Meaning their training has 4 key components, adult, less, OB/gyn and mental health.

So if you are in the UK and doing adult branch, you would be considered only 1/4 trained. Do the other 3 branches as well, and you are good to go.

I can’t do the other branches, you can only choose one branch at university.

Right. Since the inception of P2K there have been no generalist nursing courses in the UK. You would have to go back 3 times and do each of the three branches, (minus the foundation part), in order to meet the requirements.

Or else try to obtain a study visa to do RN training in the US, but its expensive, most people finish with a debt of around $200K.
