*:.Advice Needed:RN Newbie in NYC.:*

hey everyone!

:nurse:

this is my first thread in this fabulous community of nurses. i first discovered it while studying for the nclex-rn and i'm forever grateful for it because it helped me so much through many times of indescribable:uhoh3: stress and anxiety!

i passed the nclex, thank god:yeah:. but i'm now working on the "getting a job" process. i moved to nyc a year ago and would love to work in a top city hospital to gain solid experience as a new gradute. i'm applying in nyp and mount sinai. i have experience as a nurse intern and extern in a long island hospital. there are a lot of positions posted in radiology, cardiac cath, medicine, oncology, but i dont know which ones are best for me.

what hospitals do you guys recommend in nyc?

what positions are best for a new grad nurse?

if working in nyc how fast and how were you able to find a job?

any tips on resumee, interviews, applying process?

do you think i'll be able to find a job fast? :wink2:

hope to hear responses soon & thank you in advance for your opinions & advices!

You've been applying to great hospitals, try applying to not so great hospitals. Kings County, Queens General, Jamaica, Elmhurst etc etc.

why are those hospitals considered not so great

Because they're not in Manhattan and because they serve the under-served.

yes I know:p

I think the idea is for the more popular hospitals, there is going to be great competition for their new grad programs and not everyone applying will be able to get in. Just think about the # of people on this forum who are looking at hospitals like NYP, Mount Sinai, NYU, etc, and there are a number of NY nursing schools graduating nurses every fall and spring. So apply broadly!

For those who are completing nursing school outside of NY, I think it might be wiser to gain your experience more locally and then move to NY. Also, if you are going for your ADN, think about getting your BSN or at least be a good deal through the curriculum. The goal is to present the best application possible, and I think for outer staters, it is to gain that experience.

Winthrop Hospital in Mineola is having a job fair this Wednesday, August 27. I saw it advertised in today's Newsday. I think it is from 1130-2. It said experienced as well as new grads welcome.

I did an OB clinical there and really liked the hospital. Good luck to anyone who decides to go!

Hey mcs,

Did you try contacting the different units in NYP...I used to work there, recently, spec Cornell campus, recently quit. I know for a fact that theyre short in some of their ICU's, and probably PERIOP. If you are really desperate to working in NYP, I know their BURN ICU is in need. But I think the problem is with the budget, I remember they were cutting down in the OT bcoz of the budget. That could be the reason why they're not hiring. Well let me know how it goes. I can give you the skinny on the different units...w/c ones are alright, and w/c ones are....... you know fill it in.

Why would you want to work in a "not so great hospital"? I always strive for the best! And I know great hospitals hire new graduates! :nurse: Let see what happens... Wish me luck! Maybe I will need to do that in the future...

To get your foot in the door

To gain experience

To show the other hospitals you have something more to offer than the other 65 people applying for the same position

I agree always strive for the best, but sometimes you got to crawl before you walk.

Hello, how about the NYC health and hospitals, Bellevue, Lincoln, Jacobi, etc. There are plently of great hospitals in NYC besides NYP, Mt. Sinai, Cornell, etc. Try Lenox Hill, Roosevelt, St. Lukes, Metropolitan, Harlem Hospital, St. Vincent's

things are not too good in nyc first the city hospitals are not hiring, 2nd st. lukes who belongs to beth israel's group are not hiring because long island college hospital closed their labor and delivery unit plus they laid off more nurses so they are going to give priority to those nurses that were laid off to get the jobs. That being said does not leave alot of opptions:(
