hey everyone!
this is my first thread in this fabulous community of nurses. i first discovered it while studying for the nclex-rn and i'm forever grateful for it because it helped me so much through many times of indescribable:uhoh3: stress and anxiety!
i passed the nclex, thank god:yeah:. but i'm now working on the "getting a job" process. i moved to nyc a year ago and would love to work in a top city hospital to gain solid experience as a new gradute. i'm applying in nyp and mount sinai. i have experience as a nurse intern and extern in a long island hospital. there are a lot of positions posted in radiology, cardiac cath, medicine, oncology, but i dont know which ones are best for me.
what hospitals do you guys recommend in nyc?
what positions are best for a new grad nurse?
if working in nyc how fast and how were you able to find a job?
any tips on resumee, interviews, applying process?
do you think i'll be able to find a job fast? :wink2:
hope to hear responses soon & thank you in advance for your opinions & advices!

I think you'll have noprob finding a job with two externships under your belt-i had none andfound a med/surg position about 1 12 months after sending out resumes, searching etc...but the job didnt start for another monthand expect the process to be fairly long, b/c you usually have to take a pharm test before officially being hired, get a physical fill out lots of paperwork before officially being hired.
go to open houses, job fairs and callrecruiters directly as well as nurse managers at hospitals you'd liketowork.Just sendingout a resumes won't get you anywhere.I don'tknow many who got a job or call back doing just that. Union hospitals in the city start off with a little over 70,000 starting pay for bsn grads

I'm having the same problem! I haven't graduated yet though -- 3 more weeks. Still, I haven't heard from anyone yet either. Out of desperation I applied to like 6 jobs in NJ and heard back from one right away. But I really want to work in NYC. Grrrr.

i'm a new grad too, graduated in june with a ADN, went to a job fair many hospitals said to contact them when you pass the nclex, took it and passed it almost a month ago, went applying all over the city and now all the hospitals are giving me the run-around, that they dont want nurses with ADN's, when at the job fair they tell you that yes we do accept nurses with ADN's...... dont know what else to than just wait and keep calling them
i mean seriously.... whatever happend to the "nursing shortage"? :/

I am really nervous. I want to move back to NY to save money (move back home). So as an outsider I may have touble finding something. I have only been a nurse since April and working since May. I want to move by Dec. But I do not want to move without a job. I am currently in NC.
There's no such thing as a "nursing shortage"!
Ive been applying almost everywhere in the city for two weeks now.
I called Mount Sinai and they told me to wait for a call... (great!)
I received an email from NYP, saying all their new graduate positions were full, that they would contact me in the future.
I'm a registered nurse in NY, have an internship and a externship experience, a BSN with high honors, and a speak, write, and read perfect Spanish!
Im preparing myself to go personally to every hospital during this week to hand out all my documents and request an interview !!!
I don't know what else to do ! Good luck to everyone!
Have anyone heard about a career/job fair in NY?

You've been applying to great hospitals, try applying to not so great hospitals. Kings County, Queens General, Jamaica, Elmhurst etc etc.
Why would you want to work in a "not so great hospital"? I always strive for the best! And I know great hospitals hire new graduates! Let see what happens... Wish me luck! Maybe I will need to do that in the future...
jaja i dont blame you i also want to work at a good hospital, it's proving to be hard in an area where there seems not to have a shortange of nurses.
