advice? asked to go home during shift

hi, long time lurker, first time poster

I have been practicing as a RN for almost 5 years. I have achieved some success during my time and have also learned a lot from old mistakes and habits. From January to May, I was working a FT position and was also working a per-diem position in the hospital. I was going to be awarded employee of the month at my FT job. However, I received a new job offer in a lucrative position.

I had accepted a new job and was very thrilled to become a member of this institution. I felt with my present experience and hard work, I would be able to pass orientation and begin working on my own. Unfortunately, some things were not going well, specifically communication. Monday, I was asked to go home and that they would be in touch with me. I told them how much I wanted to stay but am realistic and understand I may not be asked to. I maintained my position at my old 2 jobs at a per diem and will begin reaching out to them for a FT gig asap. However, I am still hopeful in being called back to orientation. Is it possible they would entertain the idea and bring me back, should I send them an e-mail? idk, much uncertainty.

better question, I have perused some of the similar threads, but it seems like there is a zero percent chance they do invite me to return, judging based off the other threads. ive come to expect it, but has there been anyone invited back, ala He is risen and given another chance?

You can't base your experience off of someone else's. You were told yesterday to go home. Give it a few days before you email them.

I would be proactive in starting a job search, whether or not they ask you to return.

It sounds like you probably came off as feeling that you didn't need orientation. I Only have 4 years of experience but I train a lot of nurses at my job. The ones that come off that way are frustrating to work with, especially because they ARE brand new to the facility even if not brand new to nursing. Every facility has different policies/procedures and it's very important to just stop and listen to your preceptor. Maybe come down a notch next time and take the opportunity to benefit from your preceptors teachings. If they sent you home in the middle of shift I would say don't expect them to call you back, I've never heard of that happening actually.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would send you home over this especially as you are an experienced nurse. You are not a new grad. Very strange. I think I would be happy to go back to my old job, hopefully that is still an option. At least you were smart to stay there per diem. I would stand up for yourself and remind them that you are not a new grad. Sounds unbelievable to send you home over an IV!

if there are any updates, ill post em this week, if only to serve as a cautionary tale.

How long were you into the orientation?

I believe your preceptor was intimidated, ran to the nurse manager ( who she is quite chummy with) and complained about something.

Unless you committed an error, the way you were treated is unacceptable. Communication runs both ways. It is up to the preceptor to facilitate communication, more so than the orientee.

The facility is not so " thrilling" now.

4th week. different preceptor each day, two of the preceptors had nothing but good stuff to say, one said I was improving and she was impressed. managers had small concerns like my paper work being tardy, which I admit error, but I gradually had all my checklists done. their big thing is doing things with the preceptor, like med pass. most of the time preceptor would say call me if u need anything, so I imagined to have free reign.. or call them when I am doing this, which I would always do.. only time I jumped the gun was taking on a patient load of 4 when I was only to take 3, but again, of the 4, two were to d/c'd.. i really thought i was doing good, not great, but steadily improving.

It sounds to me like you're coming across a little to ahem "boldly" for their liking. I'm not sure why as an RN of 5 years you can't start an IV without your preceptor standing over your shoulder? And I'm just going to say it, it really sounds like you're holding back some key information.

Based on what you HAVE shared so far though, yes, it sounds like you've been fired if they sent you home in the middle of your shift. Sorry.[
