ADN grads:feeling stuck?

Any other ADN gads out there trying to decide between using their license and going back for a BSN to get into a GN program? I know once I use my license for 6 months or more I'll no longer be eligible to enter a GN program and if those 6 months don't involve acute care it makes it harder to get into a hospital. It will take about a year to do the BSN so by then my license will have not been used for a little over 2 years. Any other ADNs heading back for their BSN? Did having the BSN help you get into a GN program?

I did start back for my BSN. I graduated in May 13 and found out real quick how hard it was to get a job here. I started back in late Aug for my BSN, and just barely got hired last week! I am half way through my BSN, so don't know if it really helped me or not.

Congrats on your new job! Is it at a hospital? Were you hired through a GN program or straight to the floor? Also, if you don't mind, what state are you in? Thanks for commenting :)

Thanks! It is at the local hospital here. We live in middle TN. It is straight on the floor, not a GN position. I was told previously that they only hire new grads here for med surge. I applied to the med surge, had an interview and thought it went great, but wasn't hired. The lady that interviewed me told me that she hires new grads for oncology as well, and remembered my resume from an oncology position i applied for a few months earlier. just so happened another oncology position opened up, I applied, interviewed with the same lady and was hired! I start orientation on Monday!

Is there anyway you can go to school and work? I'm currently doing my BSN online and I'm going to start working in a few weeks.

I did my bsn program while in a new grad residency program that was full time. It's definitely doable, but not fun. Lol

ash, I guess we'll find out! I'm sure it'll be tough, but I'm not about to quit school right now.

Jane Doe, thanks! It was very difficult to find a job! I have roughly 400 applications in all over the place, and only had 2 interviews! Everyone wants experience :/ I don't know what I did to impress this lady, but obviously something to have her interview me twice!

I have my adn and applied to at least 10 places, two interviews, no job. I then applied in anther state, had 4 interviews, 2 of which where in new grad programs and received 3 offers. This sounds great, I know, but it was after months of nothing and I had to relocate away from all family and friends. I also got my acls to try and make myself more applicable but I don't think that helped at all. Just keep applying and you WILL land something! Also I graduated in June and began BSN classes in January.

Most of the GN programs here don't even take ADN, they require BSN. So, I am working with my ADN while getting my BSN. I do not work in a hospital, though. I will apply to GN programs after I graduate or get near to it.

Ceebeejay, are you saying that you can use your license as an ADN but still be considered a new grad when you get your BSN? I thought that if you used your license for more than 6 months (regardless of ADN or BSN status) you were no longer considered a GN and would not be eligible to apply for a new grad program? Anyone else have more info on the subject?

Seems like I'm not the only one heading back for the BSN! I would work my ADN license if I were able to find a position. Thanks for all the info..this site is so helpful! :)
