Accepted FSCJ Summer 2010 Students

U.S.A. Florida

Hey everybody!

I just wanted to start a separate thread regarding our acceptance into the FSCJ (a.k.a. FCCJ) Summer 2010 "RN" program. I know we've all been posting to the "hopefuls" page but now that we aren't "hopefuls" anymore, and we're more like "stressfuls"... I thought I'd start a new page... JOIN ME! :)

I guess it is technically called something else other than "RN program" but... here we go anyway.

I'm still a bit confused as to whether, during orientation, I should be more focused on getting a hospital close to my house or a teacher that will be great during my first term.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I've always made the teacher my first priority but I'm curious as to whether or not, those of you who have been there, think that there is a big enough difference in teachers that we would be wise to drive for miles to get to a specific one.

The reason i asked is because looking at THIS semesters books for identical courses (and upgrading to the newest additions) is cheaper online than the posted prices at our bookstore online... At least the ones that HAVE prices. I was looking strictly at the ones listed in the packet... but the bookstore lists several others...I just didn't want to duplicate the box... and of course if I could buy the contents of the box for cheaper I will... I suspect I will be at the bookstore the first day after break comparing prices...

I bought my books in January and paid a total of $886. I bought all of the non-required books except for the Dosage calc (got it for Christmas) it goes for $98. The box has 8 books and 2 online components (like MyMathlab for Algebra). You can only buy the complete online access to all of the books if you purchase the box. I hear this is an outstanding tool. I would suggest - buy the box and then get the other books elsewhere.

I am also in section 6. Welcome!

Yea for Section 6! I think I got the logistics of start times for daycare and clinicals figured out with a mommy friend who lives nearby... Now... On to the fun stuff...

For the books... I just bought the books listed out other than the box in my orientation packet. Pretty much every book was cheaper than our bookstore's posted price and I even found an online coupon code that gave me an additional 15% off. B&N and Overstock seem to have comparable prices. All of these were new. I figure that since they are mostly reference books I might as well buy a copy that will last awhile. Used copies are much cheaper but once I figured in shipping, etc... not too big of a difference for most of these.

I'm waiting on Dosage Calc only b/c there is a brand new edition (1/2010) and I want to see which they expect us to purchase. But it seems to be about $80 online.

JenPerezPSU what website did you use to buy the books, B&N or Overstock? Can you share the coupon code, or is it outdated now? Also, did you buy the Term box from the bookstore?

I went through B&N only because I got free shipping and they had the iclicker and Overstock did not. The 15% coupon expired yesterday but I found a 10% coupon here: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/barnesandnoble.com

If I would have been smart i would have done it in multiple orders since they had free shipping anyway... and used the coupon on more than one item... If you have an ebates.com account you can earn cash back also through clicking on barnes and nobles through their site. (Just copy down the promo code from the retailmenot.com website and then go through ebates if you have an account... They send you checks once you reach $10 of credit and you get $5 just for joining...). Also if you do multiple orders make sure you go back through the ebates link each time so they can give you your credits...

I only bought the books I listed and saved a bunch of money (as opposed to the posted prices at efolletts.com). I also bought the most current version of the books... regardless of what our bookstore had posted for this past semester since summer term books aren't listed yet but I went from the sheet in the orientation packet and the website for ISBN#'s. (There was one book that came out new 03/10)... They are mainly reference books so I wasn't worried about it not being the correct one for a class... I AM however waiting until i can see which version of Dosage Calc we need. There is a new version (01/10) available online.

I have not bought the box yet since it's spring break and I only had orientation on Thursday... I tried to call the bookstore Friday to ask a question and they were closed already. :uhoh3:

Jen I got the ISBN # from the book store for the Dosage Calc book: 9781435454101. Hope this helps you.

Are the books from B&N the actual books we need?

If so, I plan on buying everything you bought, lol

EDIT:

I cant find the iclicker on the B&N site

Online Coupon V3W3A7X Details:

For each customer, this coupon can be redeemed once at online at BN.com.

This coupon expires April 11, 2010 at 2:59 a.m. Eastern Time.

The 10% discount will be applied to the most expensive eligible item in the order - not the entire purchase - and will be deducted after all other eligible discounts, including (if applicable) the standard Member discount, are applied.

I am also buying the box so i can get the full access... And I bought the "Pocket Companion for Physical Examination and Health Assessment" 9781416038542 which is listed as an optional item. I didn't see it on your list of books, but it was on our sheet.

I'm glad you were able to verify the ISBNs for me. I would have been stressing over it. :yeah:

Also purchased my SKILS KIT today. I managed to get most of what I need accomplished.

On a sour note, my car was broken into today and the thief was probably pretty bummed when he discovered he got my old debit card, an invalid license, my CPR card, my zoo membership card, my kids YMCA cards, and a broken camera. The police have already recovered my ID and debit card... I'm sure they tossed the rest... Yuck! One smashed car window later. I spent the bulk of my day handling that. It's a shame that people have no respect for other's belongings... and 2 car seats which they covered with broken glass. I realize people are desperate but REALLY? Thankfully no one was hurt. And the police happened to stop someone with at least some of my stuff on them.

wow. That sucks.

Was it broken into when getting the skills kit?

I hear that place is in a not so safe area.

Nope. Actually I was about a mile from FSCJ Kent campus... at my son's gymnastics class in the morning. I know better than to leave my purse in the car but just forgot to grab it. :uhoh3: But hey, they managed to get my mind off Nursing for a few hours... until I realized I needed to replace my new CPR card... The class was $25 and the replacement card is $10... I might as well retake the class :uhoh3: Maybe not...
