Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

Published

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

equest2789 , they make you reply back within 5 days of receiving the acceptance letter.
i just received the letter on monday, they put me in the waiting list T_T It is kind of ******* me off because I thought my GPA (3.9 for prereq from binghamton University) would be high enough. I think they also consider volunteer experience and other stuffs. guess i will stay in bing for one more year

I am really surprised you were put on a waiting list - don't give up, I remember when I went for an information session, they told us how a lot of people were put on the waiting list and many people dropped their pre-reqs and late in June they got a lot of funding and were able to accept a few more people!

For those that have been accepted, could you tell me when you have to notify SB that you will be attending the program? Just trying to get an idea of when they'll know if spots are going to open up or not. Thanks!

Yep, within 5 days, but don't give up I'm sure there are people who a)won't be able to financially afford it b) don't get all their health documents in on time or c) decide to go to a different school!

Hello,

By any chance can someone tell me the exact starting date for the summer 2009 program at Stony Brook? I have not heard from them yet and I have one more pre-req to take. I don't want to take it if I don't get in. So I am wondering if I get in after the start of spring semester can I wait till summer 1 session to take it...

RisingStar, orientation will be held on June 29-30. I "assume" school will start the first or second week of July.

Best of Luck to you!

Is anyone but e still waiting for their packet? I spoke with SB on monday and they said that all decisions were made on last wed-thurs, and that everyone would be aware of their status this week...but its wedensday and still nothing....the tourture.

I am starting the accelerated program in July 2009. Does anyone know what tuition is for the accelerated program?

Goingthere,

I am getting conflicting stories from the staff at Stony Brook. I have not been accepted, rejected, or put on any waiting list. I called and she stated that all decisions would be made by mid Jan.

When did you call? Speak with Nancy at the admissions office, she has more access than anyone. I was beginning to wonder myself until she checked, but she assured me that all letters would be out at homes by the end of this week.

I called the nursing office yesterday. Two different people in the office stated mid Jan. I will call nancy in admissions today. Thanks

I am thinking it may be due to the fact that I haven't finished most of their required prereq (I have only bio and chem done when I applied) since they only have a few prereq.

thanks for letting me know this, but I think by that time (June), I would already found an apartment in binghamton and pay the deposit to them already lol I just hope they will give me a spot earlier than May
