Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.
I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.
I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:
Microbio: B-
A&P1: B
A&P2: In progress
Chem 1: C
Other Science: C+
Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately )
I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.
I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:
Microbio: B-
A&P1- B
A&P2 B+
Chem1: C
Other Science: A
(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)
I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school
So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry
It's funny, I'm the only guy in my house with my wife and three daughters. When we are all together, I always say "hey guys...c'mon guys etc." to them. Since they are my favorite people in the whole world, of course it is not meant to disregard or disrespect anyone (especially not you or ifoundnemo). On the admissions situation, I guess I am not really putting all my proverbial eggs in the Stony Brook basket, but it would be a best case scenario if I got accepted. If not, I have other options, but I don't want to go and spend money and time I can put to good use on things other than more school applications while the possibility remains at Stony Brook. One way or another, when the letter comes it will help move things along for me.
Hi, I'm new to this site....a little overwhelmed by the amount of information. I got into Stony Brook's Accelerated program and very anxious to start.
I'm alos the only guy in my house, unless you count our dog....I also have a wife and 3 daughters.
Haven't seen another post from you... did you get in... good luck
hey everyone... just found out about this site... i also got into the program and just wondering what has everyone been doing since receiving the admissions packet? of course i mailed in my response letter... but now what? did anyone get any responses back from stony brook? ..... did anyone finish completing the "admission check list" ? ... o btw.. congrats to EVERYONE who made the class =D... it was definitely a challenge for me to make it =)
Hello-
This is my first post on AllNurses. I am attending the Accelerated BSN program at Stony Brook starting in July 2009 and am just trying to do some research about living off campus. It appears that there are a number of apartments within walking distance of campus, but a lot of them are listed as being available now (in April) instead of in July, when I'll need to start a lease. Is anyone else looking to live off campus? Is there a better place for the class of 2010 to congregate online and try to run things like this by each other?
Thanks

Hi - I believe that there is a website through Stony Brook for people looking for Off-Campus roommates. I would call the housing department and ask them about it! You can also try craigslist
Thanks! I'm having trouble writing a personal reply back, but yes, I would be interested in getting in touch with your two friends. I'm looking for July 1 instead of June 1, but maybe we can work something out. Thanks again!
what is your email address? I will send you her number and email :)
Can you give a range for gpa requirements or the extra things u did to make ur application stand out..like volunteer, etc. my overall is above a 3.3 but my sciences are a 2 something. if the psych, etc are included it is much higher. i was also wondering about the letter of recommendations. any advice on who to choose like professor, supervisor, etc? oh and do u think it is ok to ask for a recommendation if u only know the person 2-3 months? sorry for all the questions its just that i am applying this year and i am so nervous:(
I am in the same boat! I applied 2 weeks before the deadline... I didn't get that technical in calculating my GPA but I had a 3.3 with a finance degree. I only completed 3 pre-reqs and my GPA in those was a 3.66. I am taking Micro now and A&P II next semester. I have been a volunteer EMT for 3 years now and I believe I have very strong recommendations and essay, but I guess everyone says that!! I went to the most recent info session and it only made me more nervous because they basically said everyone is competitive, if you don't get in you just didn't get in! I am applying to SUNY Downstate as well, which seems much easier to get into... but I am not thrilled to be in Brooklyn!
I guess we can keep each other posted and bite our nails together!! :)

Hi Melliena,
It seems you have decent gradse and experience. Your science grads seem decent also. My degree is in health w/ a lot of sciences but the science gpa is not so high b/c i had to take a full course load of sciences. I volunteered and i am a cna. i actually wasnt going to apply to sbu b/c its so competitive but decided to last minute b/c the private universities are so expensive. i see most of the accepted people on here have a 3.8 which makes me really nervous. you said you completed 3 prereqs and currently taking micro and A and P II. Did you apply for the one year or the two year? I was curious b/c I thought 3 prereqs were all you needed for the one year. I hope we both get in. i am panicking b/c i dont want a rejection letter around christmas time:(i will either jump for joy or cry :sniff:as i enter the new year...it will be like everything i worked for in the last 2 yrs were a waste). I havent looked into suny downstate b/c i heard it was harder than sbu but i will look into it. i agree about the brooklyn thing...it will be a long commute at least for me. what else did they say at the info session? did they give a range of gpa's for those accepted?did they give useful information?
I know I have been completely obsessing! I submitted my downstate app today. I went to thier open house and it seemed that they were much less competetive then sb but now I read all this stuff and I am completely freaking out. I had thought of Downstate as my "safety" accelerated program, according the this site...boy was I wrong! In the open house they said that yes they have a 1000 aplications but only about 200 of them are even really qualifed competetive applicants... ie never took the net, not registered/ having any chance of completing outstanding prereqs. I am really nervious bc I am in Micro now and I still need a&pII which I am registered for in the spring.
I am going to wait and see if I hear from the sb accelerated program and apply to the 2 year program right before the deadline.
Everything I have read on these sites it seems that all of the ones who are def in hear by jan 1 and they wait to hear from those students and then send waitlists denials and a few more acceptances.. I feel they same way do about all of the waiting!!
I saw your question about references
My references were:
A RN who supervised me on the ambulance... also a Sb student
an NP I knew personally but also treated her father on the ambulance.. she was sb alum for BS & her NP
I had the Chief of My Fire dept
I also had My boss for the last 5 years.
Hope that helped!
Keep me posted if you hear any information.... I will do the same! If any of the students who got in last year have any insite/words of encouragement..... I would love to hear it.
I just have this feeling deep in my gut that i will get denied for the one yr and stand a better chance for the two yr.if i dont get in i will try farmingdale. i heard if u already have a BS or BA you still have to do 4 yrs total w/ farmingdale which makes no sense to me since the classes from the 1st two yrs of farmindgale i already have from a suny school. Dont worry...I have a good feeling you will be getting into at least one of the programs. you have done a lot:) good luck. honestly i think i get more anxious visiting this site..lol.i am going to start looking into other deadlines and try to relax as much as i can. i thought i would never have a stressful christmas after i graduated and didnt have to worry about finals and grades coming in.i am here thinking about mistakes i may have made on my application..i should stop thinking about it for now. what's done is done and i can't change it now..lol

For those of you who got accepted into the SB accerlerated program, did you apply for the scholarship?
If so, did you get your acceptance or rejection letter yet?
Thanks
