Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

Nemo,

This was also your second time applying correct? I was told in the open house that makes a big difference.

Has anyone heard anything yet?

It doesn't matter - if you reapply a second time and are not qualified they are not going to let you in, I know a few people who applied twice and still weren't accepted. The first time my application wasn't even looked at because of a technicality regarding wrong dates posted on the website. Good luck

Hello ifoundnemo, I know you are in accelerated program.. but do you know when 2-year program acceptance are sent out? I applied for 2 year program for next fall, completed application in early October. they said I should hear from them in 4-6 weeks which is by now. but from what read in this thread, it seems like that they make all decision almost at once. Well.. I wonder if they are even looking at 2-year program applications right now. I HAVE to get into Stony Brook Nursing...>.

I believe the deadline for the two years application is sometime late December or early January? Pretty sure. They don't make decisions on students until all applications are in so whoever you talked to probably meant 4-6 weeks after the deadline :) I'd think sometime in early spring you'd hear! Good luck

I applied to both programs last year. I am currently in the 2 year program which I absolutely love. But from what I hear both programs are awesome. Last year when I applied to both I heard from the 1 year around mid january and then the 2 year in mid march. It is a long and stressful waiting game. Good LUCK!

The deadlines sound right. The admissions coordinator(Dr.T) said we should hear back from the one yr program in mid to late january. i dont think i will get my application for the two yr in on time. i didnt know you could turn them in at the same time. I really hope I get into the one year. I am so nervous, I am trying to be positive but its so stressful. Just curious..did you take intro to nursing- HNI 290?

Hi everyone! Did anyone get a reply yet? I have been wating on mine and I am super nervous! i just want to know!

I did not take intro to nursing - I took statistics and the group theory course. You really should try to apply to both programs - I really wanted the one year when I applied and I am so happy that I am now in the two year - the way in which they run the program is awesome and works for me. When I applied last year I did both application around the same time - you can use the same supporting documents - so you really dont have to do that much more to submit the 2nd application. Good Luck with everything.

No word on my end, but then again I am on vacation and my mail is on hold anyway :D

So you dont have to ask your professors or supervisors to resubmit the recommendation? All you have to do is inform SBU that you want to use them for both applications? I was applying to both both b/c of the holidays one of my references cant submit it b/c they are so busy. I told my references that i needed two ..one for each program thinking they would save it but i guess not. i should have sent the link for both programs at the same time..that was my mistake. you live and you learn:(

Well you have 2-4 weeks to hear something so i am sure you will have your mail by then:)

All supporting documents are used for both applications - so you only need to do one set of references, essay and transcripts. All you have to do is submit the two applications - I believe the appln deadline for the 2 year is Jan 10. Good Luck applying.
