Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

I thought the 2-year prog deadline was on 12/31 ... did that change?

I already posted this on the 2010 thread and I am hoping to get some insure from those in previous years! Did any of u experince the same?:

I checked my solar just now and there is a New Students tab!!! I have tabs to pay my deposit, set new student preferences and finaical aid I think... But when I click pay the deposit I get this:

Your admission status/term is not eligible for deposit processing. Please contact Admissions for further information

And when I click new student preferences I get this:

Welcome to Stony Brook University!

Our records indicate that you have not been admitted to the HSC, WEST, or Southampton campus for the current application terms, hence this application does not apply to you, please exit out of this link.

I am completely freaking and of course the admissions office closes at 4?? Who closes at 4?? and doesnt open up again until 10am? Does it mean I am wait listed... this is just cruel!!

Hi findingnemo i have a question what technical errors with the dates that you were talking about?

Hi Ifoundnemo what did u mean by technicality in the wrong dates on the websites?

Hi Nwankwoa,

Since you were wondering about timing... I have just received my letter of admission today (One year accelerated BSN).

I wanted to ask students currently enrolled in the program... What do you think about it?

Thanks!

Like FL7463, I just received my acceptance today!! I'm absolutely over the moon--I was concerned I wouldn't be accepted anywhere.

For those of you who are curious, I had a 3.18 UGrad GPA from UCSB (Bio Major, Minors in Writing and Japanese) and a 3.6 GPA in the prereqs. Not super impressive, but I had strong rec letters and a really strong essay.

Now that I'm accepted, I'm really curious about the program details. I've heard my fair share of horror stories about nursing schools in general (vague and confusing teaching methods, abusive teachers, poor program organization) and, though it would be nice to avoid these problems completely, it's better to know about them beforehand if they exist. I've combed allnurses and found little specific info about Stony Brook's program.

Are teachers helpful and friendly?

Are there any teachers or classes that are really difficult?

Do instructors provide the information needed to succeed in the course, or expect you to find it yourself?

Is it hard to deal with the School of Nursing's bureaucracy?

If you hardly sleep, is that because of the nursing curriculum in general or the nursing curriculum at Stony Brook?

How is the stony brook student life?

Any info you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks.

did anyone apply to the 2 yr program?

Word is that letters are going out through the end of the month, so there is still hope.

Word is out that all decisions were made last Wednesday. We should be getting something in the mail this week. *fingers crossed* Good luck all!

Just checking in on all of my friends!! Good Luck and let me know as soon as you hear!
