Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

Grades are important, but that's not the only thing that the nursing professors look at in accepting the applicants. Your recommendation letters and essay are very important factors also. Also it helps to show some volunteer experience or some experience in the medical field. Hope my answer helps. Good Luck!

I'm not sure my experience would help you, but I was accepted with a 3.96 GPA and a 4.0 in the prereqs. The reason I think grades may be important for this program is that you do over 60 credits in 3 semesters (that's more than 20 credits a semester!), so it must be hard for ANYONE to succeed. I think the reasoning is that you need to be a great student academically to make it through.

FYI -- I decided not to attend Stony Brook, mostly because I don't think I could handle the rigor of the program. I did really well in undergrad, but it seems too much for me!

When did you hear back from Stony that you got accepted? Dec, Jan, Feb?

Thanks

It must've been Nov. or Dec. (based on where I was living when I got the letter). I can't remember anything more specific, sorry!

Congrats on your acceptance.

Was it a large envelope that they sent you or a small one?

What is in the letter.

Thanks
