Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

Published

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

Hi Madison,

I am currently applying to Stony Brook's 12 month program. I am also going to start applying to the 2 year program because Stony Brook is my top choice. Would you mind telling me about the application process? I am filling out two applications, do I need to send my transcripts twice and have my recommendation letters filled out online again? Do you think they accept more applicants to the 2 year vs. 1 year program? I really want to get into the 1 year program. Did you write two essays?

Do you know approximately how much the 2 year program costs, is it about the same as the 1 year?

Sorry, I have so many questions! Look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Hi Christina,

I am on the same boat as you!! I'm working on both applications right now!! and stony is my top choice too!! =D I think you do need to send everything twice, since you have two different applications. And i believe you have two different PIN on the website right? The two accounts are not linked together... this is what I think! and for the essay, I'm gonna write one for both applications since the questions are the same. And you are the same person applying, so your answers for those questions shouldnt change, right? =P

Me and Paco69 are chatting in this other post so you might wanna come join us or maybe support each other through the application process? =D

as far as the application... i applied to the 1 year at sb and suny downstate, i really needed the 1 year program but did apply to the 2 year on the last day possible... i was afraid they would accept me in 2 year instead of one year. but if i recall i did do a second application but they used my letters of rec & transcripts from the 1 year... but just call to confirm ... i know i did not resubmit recommendations. i used essentially the same essay for both apps. i did include my resume as a separate attachment because i had a career before and had my existing resume.

we all have debated on why we got in over others.... i think it has a ton to do with your essay and your recommendations, along with your prereq grades. you must have at least 3 of the pre req's done in time to apply. i only had 3 and finished the others in the spring semester, that was my biggest fear (among many :) about only having 3 done and them choosing someone with more.

i would recommend going to one of the info sessions if at all possible, they give you plenty of info. i believe there is one 10/4 at 7:30pm because they asked current students to speak at it.

Mellia - what do you think makes a strong essay? I don't have a personal experience with a family member that made me want to go into nursing or anything like that. Any suggestions or tips to finalize my essay before I submit on Monday?

thanks!
