Accelerated Nursing Program @ Stony Brook Question :)

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.

I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.

I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:

Microbio: B-

A&P1: B

A&P2: In progress

Chem 1: C

Other Science: C+

Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately :( )

I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.

I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:

Microbio: B-

A&P1- B

A&P2 B+

Chem1: C

Other Science: A

(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)

I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school

So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry :(

hey daisie did u get in yet? are you off the waitlist? thanks

Orientation is June 28 and 29. The program officially starts June 30.

The tuition deposit is due April 1.

We have to have our admissions packet (health form, , CPR card etc) mailed in two weeks before the program starts.

And then we're good to go!

if the tution deposit is due april 1st. do you think i have a chance as an alternate to get in?

Hi nwankwoa. I have not heard anything yet. How about you?

No nothing yet. Still waiting, praying. Its already april, I hope we get in. I need to get in.

Heads up

So, I am currently enrolled at SB, started last June, graduating this May - yippee!!!! So, I am sure you knew it would not be a bed of roses, it really isn't, but it is a GREAT PROGRAM.

Summer Semester:

Fundamentals of Nsg. - 10 credits

Health Assessment - 4 Credits

Perspectives in Nursing - 1 Credit

Nutrition - 1 credit

Medmath - 2 credits (I think)

TOTAL - 18 credits

PS. The do not panic, the fundamentals credits include clinical hours. Clinicals were 1 day per week for 12 hours - e.g. Sunday 7am to 7pm. I can't even remember the summer well, I think we had classes all day (Monday to Thursday) through 4 pm except 1 day to 6pm for Math.

TIP: Go the the Health Sciences bookstore before classes start, check out the math book and start doing the chapters and worksheets, it really helps when classes start, and you can skip some of the math classes.

Fall:

(early Fall) OB or Peds - 6 credits with clinicals

Psych - 6 credits with clinicals

Ecological Frameworks - 2 credits (ends in early Nov.)

Research in Nursing - 2 credits (ends early Nov.)

(Late Fall) - if you did OB for first half i.e. to end October, you will do Pediatrics from Nov. to Dec.

OB or Peds - 6 credits with clinicals

Psych - 6 credits (cont'd) with clinicals

Pharmacology (Begins mid-november, runs through April) (5 credits)

Pathology (Begins mid-November, runs through April) (3 credits)

Spring:

Med-Surg (9 credits) with clinicals

Legal and Ethical (2 or 3 credits)

Community Nsg (2 or 3) short clinicals are done in June for this course

Pharmacology (Begins mid-november, runs through April) (5 credits) - cont'd

Pathology (Begins mid-November, runs through April) (3 credits) - cont'd

Capstone Practicum (1 mth April-May). This is internship-type

The program is do-able if you organize your time. I do not recommend working while in the program, it is very demanding and you sometimes have weekend clinicals. The program is fantastic, you learn a lot, you are not at all robbed, you get to learn lots of things in the classroom and in clinicals. You will be surprised that by the end of the summer, you will already feel like a nurse and be speaking nursing jargon!

Pharmacology is the most challenging course for me thus far, you have to learn lots of drugs etc, but you have a good backgroud before taking this course, so that should help.

Clinicals are at SB and other hospitals in LI - e.g. Good Samaritan, St.Catherine's of Sienna, LIJ, NorthShore Manhasset, VA at Northport etc. Very diverse experience at each institution. StonyBrook hospital is the best, I think, great resources, teaching hospital, great for research.

Ok, think I've given you lots of info, do not panic, before you know it, you will be at the end. Just STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.

1) Are the clinicals only one day for the whole year or only one 12 hour day in the summer session?

In the Fall we had 2 clinical days, 1 for Psych and the other for OB/Peds. The Psych clinicals are shorter - approx. 6 hours because Psych runs for the entire semester. In the spring the clinicals will be 1 day - 12 hrs.

2) Is there anything that we should buy before the semester starts? Orientation is so late, I don't want to be scrambling! What is the attire we need?

I do not know if the uniforms will change, but you generally need white uniform pants (NOT SCRUBS - THEY ARE TOO THIN) e.g. Landau brand they are thicker. And a white lab coat, hip-length, no longer. You will also need white nursing shoes NO SNEAKERS - you may check out Nurse Mates. No need to rush though.

3) Is there time for a life at all??

I did/do not have much of a life during this program, because it is so intense, but we did hang out with the class at the end of the semester. You may be able to find some time to do weekend partying between exams....lol.

Hello everyone. I know This a Long thread but I have couple of questions, if anyone could help with their advise, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I have my bachelor degree from devry college in management. My GPA was like 2.7 ( not good). I have found this great accelerated nursing program in stonybrook. But I don't have any prereqs done except for English. I am very confused.

My questions are:

Can i get my prereqs done from any college ( ex, any community colleges) and will SB accept them ?

How long is the waiting period till you hear from them?

Do I get Financial Aid or I have to take loans? if so How much?

Do I get all my preqs and then apply or I can apply before?

Do I have to have nursing background? beacuse some college does require you to be an LPN before you can apply for any accelerated program?

Thank you

you can take the preq at any community college.

depending on how much they want you it can take until late january for them to give you a reply of whether you are accepted on the waitlist or rejected. If u get on the waitlist up until the first day of classes.

Dont know bout financial aid

You have to have 3 outta 5 preqs inorder to apply

No nursing background neeeded. U do have to get a CPR/First Aid i believe if you get accepted.

Since your GPA is kinda low, u have to have very very good reccomendations, volunteer experience, a really good essay and a good GPA for your science preq. That will give you the competitive edge you need.

I am currently on the waitlist and I had a 4.0 in my pre. a 3.4 undergrad gpa and very good reccomdations and a pretty good essay. So the program is really competitive.

Mine are gone as well ... I wasn't going to be able to attend this year anyway. I am out of state and would never be able to enroll @ SB at a moment's notice like I hear they do to waiting list applicants. That's OK because I was going to reapply next year, and my prereqs will be all done so perhaps that will help my application. Are you planning to re-apply?

Hi Madison,

I am currently applying to Stony Brook's 12 month program. I am also going to start applying to the 2 year program because Stony Brook is my top choice. Would you mind telling me about the application process? I am filling out two applications, do I need to send my transcripts twice and have my recommendation letters filled out online again? Do you think they accept more applicants to the 2 year vs. 1 year program? I really want to get into the 1 year program. Did you write two essays?

Do you know approximately how much the 2 year program costs, is it about the same as the 1 year?

Sorry, I have so many questions! Look forward to hearing back from you soon!
