Hi- This is my first post here, I found you guys on google and you all seemed really nice and informative.
I am in a bit of a predicament, this is a long post I'm sorry but I need some expertise advice.
I applied to Stony Brook for the Accelerated Program Starting in 2008, here were my pre-reqs:
Microbio: B-
A&P1: B
A&P2: In progress
Chem 1: C
Other Science: C+
Overall Gpa 2.76 ( I have a 3.6 from another school but they dont add them both together unfortunately )
I had my application in on time, printed out the date sheet, but there was a snafu with the wrong dates on the website, and I didnt get my references in on time, I ultimately got denied.
I want to make sure I get accepted this time around. I just graduated from Stony Brook and here are my current stats:
Microbio: B-
A&P1- B
A&P2 B+
Chem1: C
Other Science: A
(this gives a 3.0 average on the sciences)
I have also raised my GPA to 3.4, not including my 3.6 gpa from my transfer school
So my question is: I know that Stony Brook's program is extremely competitive, what do I need to do to get accepted?! I know that my Chem grade isn't the greatest, but I really do not want to take it again as I really struggled through it the first time at Stony Brook. Do you think that the C will really make or break me and I should retake it? I have to work full time all summer, so I would have to retake it online through a community college - do you think that if I simply had excellent references and personal statements my chem grade would be overlooked? I don't want to put myself into jeopardy because of one grade.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I am having an internal struggle, because my heart really isn't in retaking chemistry
NYC-He nurse I actually graduated Hunter Spring 2008, small world. Are you currently there, under the tourture of Dr. Persell?
Ohh, ifoundnemo I completly skipped your last question about the volunteer experience, sorry. But yes, I actually have some: I interned in Ob/gyn at a community clinic, shadowd a D.O (osteopathic doc) for a year, and volunteered at 2 hospitals for a year and a half....now i know why my gpa isnt stellar, ive done too much crap...lol. Well, my nerves have settled, im studying for my micro final and remainng optimistic. Good luck to the rest of us in waiting!
Anyone here applied to the Stony Brook Accelerated program and is currently going to Hunter College/CUNY?Thanks

Hi Guys,
I have been following this drama from the sidelines with my own frayed nerves, and decided to join allnurses because of this thread. I'm waiting for a letter from Stony Brook too and feel my anxiety really peaking. I just hope that if it's a rejection, it will come after Christmas. I thank you guys for posting, sharing and allowing me to alleviate some of my stress. Congratulations to those who have gotten in and good luck to the rest of us.
Best Regards
Welcome!!! Glad you transitioned from Lurker to Poster. I'm in the same boat as you with the stress, but I'm trying to hold it together by realizing that if not stony, then some other school....yep... Playing it cool. By guys do you mean me and ifoundnemo j/k. Were all saying welcome!

It's funny, I'm the only guy in my house with my wife and three daughters. When we are all together, I always say "hey guys...c'mon guys etc." to them. Since they are my favorite people in the whole world, of course it is not meant to disregard or disrespect anyone (especially not you or ifoundnemo).
On the admissions situation, I guess I am not really putting all my proverbial eggs in the Stony Brook basket, but it would be a best case scenario if I got accepted. If not, I have other options, but I don't want to go and spend money and time I can put to good use on things other than more school applications while the possibility remains at Stony Brook. One way or another, when the letter comes it will help move things along for me.

In case anyone else is still waiting to hear from SB.... I called them today and the woman I spoke to said she didn't know when they would be done but that they are in the process (obviously) of sending out the letters. I thought they would be done by now but I guess I just have to be more patient!
Equest, funny enough I called them twice and got the same answer, part of me thinks that they sent out the absolute yes and no responses, and those of us in limbo, or with classes in progress had to wait. She also didn't give a date by which people could expect them. Good luck to everyone waiting!
i just received the letter on monday, they put me in the waiting list T_T It is kind of ******* me off because I thought my GPA (3.9 for prereq from binghamton University) would be high enough. I think they also consider volunteer experience and other stuffs. guess i will stay in bing for one more year

hahahaha we definitely did! For the accelerated program, since we already have bachelor degrees, the electives are waived and also developmental and social psych. For the accelerated you need: Chem 1, Micro, AP1, AP2, 1 general chem, and any other science! For the 2 year you need the same as the accelerated plus developmental psych and social psych! Make sure you apply for the 2 year quick (you're right, the deadline is the 31st) if you're going to because your references have to be submitted again! I think they mail out denials and acceptances as they get them so don't fret!
