Hi guys,

I know a couple of you have mentioned Duke email accounts. How do we access them?

Go to mail.duke.edu and log in with your netID account!

Joining the post a bit late, but I attended the Duke Days on the 12th.

Did anyone else feel as though certain questions were evaded? Especially those concerning average loan amount taken out and average repayment time for ABSN students?
I too just realized that my financial aid package was sent to Duke email, and was disappointed by the tiny amount I received...which probably won't cover supplies even... Anyone else in this boat?

I am in the same boat! I was disappointed with my financial aid offer and am slowly coming to terms with the fact I will be paying off loans for a long time.

Yep I’m in the same boat as well. I talked with financial aid the other day. And they pretty much told me that most of their ABSN students have to take out private student loans to cover the cost of the program. Most of the private student loans have a 15yr repayment plan. Also if you sign a contract with Duke at the end of the program to work for them for two-three years they will pay back $25,000 of your tuition loans. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I tried e-mailing my assigned adviser, but she basically just told me to wait until Oct to go over specifics and wouldn't give much information.
As for the $25,000 repayment - I heard that Duke pays 33% less than average for new RNs. Essentially the lack of pay evens out for the amount they "repay" in the plan.
I'm coming to terms w/ the loans by telling myself I absolutely must commit to getting an MSN ASAP...I'm just wondering what their acceptance into the program is for ABSN students. I know the NP programs are very competitive, so that prospect is daunting as well.

@jeezlouise According to Duke's MSN website Duke Nursing graduates get preference in the selection process.

so went to duke days today, very informative. Everyone that was there today, I was with my husband in group A, let me know if you were there so i can remember your faces. The estimated cost of tuition really threw me and I started doubting my acceptance a little, because one of the financial resources I was depending on doesn't cover as much as I was expecting. Family quickly put me back on track. Now the stress of finding somewhere to live. Ready to see you all in January!!!! It will be over before we know it and the schedule doesnt seem too bad so it looks like we actually get to enjoy this experience of being a Blue Devil.

I got caught up in the warm fuzzies of acceptance too! What they definitely fail to get across at Duke Days is the amount of private loans you will potentially be walking away with...as DUSON isn't under the umbrella of Duke University - they don't cover need-based gaps by 100%. I had to pry figures from my adviser as she kept avoiding my questions over the phone...ABSN students average private loans at 60k (in addition to federal loans) and most students choose a 10-year repayment plan. Know your numbers before making a decision. It's a great investment in our futures, but it does come at a steep cost...

I also think it is important to consider loan forgiveness options. Nursing is considered to be a public service career so a lot of hospital systems and states offer loan forgiveness. I know when I attended Duke Days it was mentioned that’s Duke Hospital will offer loan repayment up to $25k for a 2-3 year commitment. I’ve done some research on the the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program and the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program. The National Health Service Corps program awards up to $50,000 in loan repayment assistance if you’re working full time. The NURSE Corps program doesn’t place a dollar limit on the award, which can be for up to 60 percent of your outstanding balance if you work full time for two years. You may qualify for assistance with an additional 25 percent of your original loan balance with a third-year commitment. Yes, you have to work for two years at a facility that has a critical shortage of nurses but this may be a great option for those who are worried about the over all amount of loans. Hope this helps!

Has anyone heard any updates on the Facebook page?

Nope. I did manage to get my Duke Hub and email account working with the Duo app on my phone.
