ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

Haha I was just thinking of posting something when I heard the new email sound from Outlook.

Do you think they'll start notifying people tomorrow if they haven't even started reviewing the applications yet? Maybe they'll notify people as they go along, or maybe they'll wait until after they've reviewed all of them. Who knows, but I will definitely be feeling the pressure this week.

I have a random question. Does anyone know what a ballpark estimate of the entire ABSN program will be? I know you can calculate the tuition per hour, but what about other fees, books, required insurance, equipment, etc? I emailed financial aid several times with no response. Has anyone else had any luck?

I've heard that they have a set criteria that if you meet or exceed it, you automatically get an interview. Maybe as those are filtered out, they are notified immediately. Then the others that didn't pass that benchmark are all reviewed and invited for interviews, so they may take a little longer? Don't hold me to it-I may have misunderstood. Anyone else heard this?

It's nice to see some activity on this thread after the weekend lull!

Carolina-- I haven't heard that but, it would make sense.

This is going to be a long week! My understanding is that they issue Duke Days invitations before Christmas. Do they also send rejections if you're not getting invited... or do they wait to send rejections in February or March with all of the acceptances?

Its a little slow work again and I get auto updates when your thread is active so I thought I would take a stab at this question. Our total cost of attendance for the entire 16 month program including tuition, fees, living expenses, health insurance, and books (EVERYTHING) is $84K. The cost increases slightly with every cohort due to inflation, but this is our COA for 2009-2010. I hope this helps...

Thanks so much jdcurly! What would your estimate be without living expenses? I live locally and am not sure how much of your estimate includes housing.

Subtract about $22K for living expenses over the course of the 16 months. They will give a complete breakdown at the open house as well as at Duke Days :)

You all have me absolutely shaking in my boots hearing that interview invites go out this week! I haven't been getting the update notifications from the thread so I came to check on it and look at everyone going crazy talking about all of this.

It's fun to see everyone's backgrounds, by the way. I'm a Classical Literature BA turned professional photographer who's basically wanted to be a nurse since I was wee-tiny but had so many health issues during my first few years of undergrad that, ironically, I couldn't do well enough to be in an intense healthcare program. But now everything's peachy and I'm ready to do this already. SO ready! I have such a deep interest in pain management in nursing and patient education and women's health... I've been a patient myself for so long and seen some really dark sides of health care and I am absolutely ready to get out there and be part of the bright side.

I took the GRE on 11/30 and got a 1470, which has me pretty darn happy. Although *she who is awesome* told me that they received my scores at Duke already, it's not in the system as being received, I haven't received them myself yet, and they're not listed online, so I'm a bit worried. Thanks, ETS, you money-hungry turds.

Whoever posted about personal statements needing to be two pages double-spaced, well, mine's almost two pages single spaced! Oops. They asked for a lot in the statements, though! :coollook:

Anyways! I'll be stalking this thread as this week progresses (and having a heart attack with every new email, I'm sure) and HOPEFULLY will be meeting some of you in January/February... :yeah:I'm keeping positive and hopeful, and hope you all are too!

Hi Everyone!

So its not even 9:00 yet and I am freaking out that I have not heard about an interview hahaha. I know this is going to be a loooooooong week. I am so anxious to hear about ALL of us going to Duke Days!

I'm sitting here at work completely useless. I am sure my company will see a huge spike in financial productivity after I hear a result so I can actually concentrate on is an interview. I am becoming Pavlov's dog, everytime my BlackBerry dings a new email, my heart palpitates!

Hope everyone is having a great Monday so far and had amazing weekends. Cheers to everyone for making it this far and all the support we have given one another. And a special thanks to JDCurly for answers from someone who has been through it!

Hope to hear from everyone soon.

Just talked with "the sweetest person ever" to ask about my status page on my app b/c it doesn't list the items like GRE, transcripts, app fee, etc. at all, and I wanted to make sure that what they see on my app is that it's complete. If you have a question about items received, call the office.

They received 197 applications and will be filling about 70 spots for this cohort.

Interviews: Yes they have an "automatic interview" benchmark if your GPA (not sure if it's prereq or undergrad) and GRE meet or exceed, you are automatically moved to interview status. I think those have been processed b/c she said that mine has been classified within that (YAY!). I have not officially been notified, so don't freak. She said that "maybe later this week" or "very soon" I will be notified by email and then a follow up phone call to schedule the interview.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem with my app status not showing up online, and I was told that my file is complete and that we would hear something "hopefully this week or next." I was also told "no worries!" but I don't know if that means don't worry about not being able to view that stuff online, or don't worry because I can expect to get an interview.

I hope we all hear some good news this week so we can relax a little!

I am so sad right now. I meet the GPA requirement but my GRE doesn't meet the requirement.

When will I know if I get an interview????

At the informational session they said they have accepted lower GRE scores. And they are thinking to throw them out completely so I don't understand why they are making this a factor in calling for interviews? Please shed some light anyone. I'm discouraged. :o
