ABSN Duke Fall 2010

Published

Hi All!

I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??:yeah:

jdcurly-

The link you posted was like a crime novel. I could not stop reading!!! OMG- I have been sitting at my desk at work READING THIS STUFF ALL DAY LONG. Insane, really. Hopefully they aren't monitoring my internet usage too closely.

GM - I curled up on the couch with a glass of wine and my laptop to read that thread...I was so into it, I was sad when it ended! It's like a movie that ends with a cliffhanger and no sequel! Haha!

Jason...

Are you saying you heard that only undergrad grades count? That sucks when I have sparkling clean graduate school grades!. Grrr.

It does seem a bit odd.. Here's how I *think* they consider about it: One of their rubrics is your undergrad GPA, and another rubric is a sort of "pass" on that if you have aced everything since. It all seems very unspecific, and I would NOT worry about it, unless you're like me and have a really crappy undergrad GPA... But if you do, know that I have heard of and/or talked to what seems like a substantial (or at least inspiring) number of current and former students who got in with bad GPAs.

Personally, I think I'll probably get passed on to the next cohort unless I can pull out a stellar GRE score next week (got an extension from the admissions dept. because of the run-around they gave us about whether it would be required). Curled up on the couch with flashcards all week... can't wait to get it out of the way.

On a different subject, do y'all feel like male applicants are still getting into schools a little easier than their sisters? I hope so for my sake, although I hate the idea of quotas and such. Opinions?

Hey Ladies and Jason :D

I really hope they look at my graduate GPA! I hae a pretty good undergrad GPA but I went to a top 5 party school, and took advatage of that type of education as well! In graduate school I put on my "serious student" hat and had a very high GPA.

I do think that male students have an advantage, so keep that in mind. Good luck on your GRE. I thought those were some of the most miserable 4 hours of my life. I am so glad I don't have to take it or I probably wouldn't apply. I seem to have some personal block when it comes to standardized testing. Seriously, my ACT/GRE scores are dismal.

Hope everyone else is having a great week. Looks like we might start hearing about Duke Days in the next week. I am going to be a wreck on Monday. I've done such little work this week has been such a struggle, I can't imagine how I'll be next week. My file was just Finally marked complete yesterday!

Best of weekends to everyone, hope yours are becoming filled with fun Holiday Parties!

Ugh, okay, so I just checked my app status and it says "incomplete" due to official GRE score not being rec'd and the class transcript which is in process (my final is on Mon) not being rec'd. Now I'm worried. I hope to be still considered, what do ya'll think?????? I just left a message w/ admissions.

And Jason, I wish I had known about the GRE maybe getting an extension, b/c I flubbed the dub on mine as I was sick and totally out of sorts, not prepared for it. Last time I spoke w/ admissions, they told me to go ahead and take it. :( I still pulled off a 3.5 on the writing part, just what they require! Whew! Hopefully that will mean something. I did so bad on the other sections that I actually scored better on the MATH, which shows how truly off I was!

rubypie~

I just submitted my last two outstanding grades THIS WEEK... I am now marked as complete. So that shouldn't be holding you up, as long as they are in the loop regarding your timeline.

I would imagine the GRE score is the problem. Perhaps call "GRE" and ask for the status of your score report?

Maybe have them overnight it? or send a fax? don't even know if that's possible, but it may be worth a try.

Hey Ruby,

I've had a mix up with a transcript and the "nice lady in the admissions office" (we got in trouble with AllNurses because we used names) told me not to worry if there are a few things late. She said it should not hold anything up as long as you are keeping them informed and updated. Give her a call if you haven't already. She is super sweet and will put your mind at ease. Don't worry you'll be fine :)

Thanks Maryash and Geneva! I know GRE is on it's way to DUSON b/c I just got mine in the mail yesterday, so if I call to have it faxed, it will probably be the same turnaround time. Just nice to know it is fine if it arrives in the next few days... I just left a message with "nice lady". I agree, she is so wonderful, she has answered all of my questions up to this point. I am going to go ahead and request my current transcript be sent as soon as final grades are in just to be safe! My professor already emailed DUSON with my current grade.

Rubypie - I had a talk with the incredibly nice and patient lady on Monday about the incomplete file thing too. My concern was that everything had been received, but it still said incomplete. She told me that everybody's is incomplete until the lady that handles data entry goes through and marks them otherwise, and assured me that they are still ready for review even if this hasn't happened yet. Apparently, they are just swamped. Also, when my GRE scores were sent in, it took a little time to have them show up as received, and my transcripts even longer than that - again, just a data entry thing. So everyone, there's a good chance all of those missing things aren't really missing at all!

Jason, yes! Being a guy should absolutely work in your favor! Good luck with the GRE, I just took mine last month and I sure am glad it's over!

So...anybody hear from Duke yet?????? :jester:

Where are you guys seeing that your file is complete or incomplete, or if they've received your GRE scores? I looked at my online app and it just says "submitted." Does that mean it's complete?

Hey Kspills! Just scroll down on that same page, and it will have your application status, as well as the status of each support document required for your file (transcripts, grades, letters, etc.). Things submitted electronically show up pretty quickly, and things sent hard copy have to be entered by staff.

Hope this helps! You can always PM me if you're still having trouble...

I love that thread for Spring 2010, too! I lurked on it when they were all going through the application process but, I never posted since it didn't really apply to me. Even so, it was cool to stand by and watch as they went through applications, Duke Days, acceptances, rejections...

Well, the week's over and it sounds like no one's heard about Duke Days, yet.

I have to admit-- I secretly feel relieved every time I look at this thread and confirm that they haven't started making interview calls, yet! I know that I should feel supportive of everyone on this board and I genuinely hope that you all get in! At the same time, I know that the first time I visit this thread and find out that interview calls are being made, I'll feel nauseous if I haven't heard anything, yet.

Here's hoping we all have some good news before Christmas!

Hey ya'll.

I get a tiny bit sad when we go dormant over the weekends. I like to share me every thought and feeling non-stop! :)

Big week for we hopefuls. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this group has lots of good news to report!!

Best wishes to you all...keep us posted.
