A True to Nursing Movie

Published

I have a somewhat random question to all you nurses out there. Is it just me, or do you want to see Hollywood come out with a movie that actually displays what we do for a living in the true light. Instead of how we are negatively depicted in shows like ER, Greys Anatomy and movies such as One Flew Over the Cokoos Nest. Maybe its just me, but would a movie that is true to the trials and tribulations that nurses go through interest you?

Just curious.....

I would like to see a series or reality program on nurses. I have seen some shows which occasionally show some reality in nursing...ER for example. But that is few and far between. People have to see what nurses really go through.

What I would like to see portrayed is the role of LPNs regarding nursing as well. We are all impacted.

I agree with most of your comments, I think most lay people wouldnt understand. A reality show would be great, besides the ER one on Discovery ch. Maybe one day it will come true, and I intend on reading about the Nurse and Spy, very interesting!

I have often thought that nurses deserve a spot on the Discovery Channel. They always have the shows like Untold Stories of The ER or Trauma Life In The ER but they never depict what the nurses do it's always the docs.

We deserve our claim to fame!:D:nurse:

If you see the movie Wit, there's a nurse who is a model of caring and competence. But she's definitely a non-intellectual in comparison to the patient and the doctors. And she's there 24/7, when in reality a dying patient would have to deal with a dozen nurses or more.

I thought Atonement did a beautiful job portraying nursing training and care during WWII. I was deeply impressed and thought they did a lot of research to get it so right.

I can't think of any modern day portrayal of nursing that is accurate on TV. I can't watch more than 5 minutes of House....I've never once seen an MD do that much hands on care!

A true nursing type movie would never make it. Someone would step in and prevent it from being released. Can you imagine what would happen if all the nurse-wanna-bes saw what nursing is really like? They would run and then the shortage of working nurses would be worse. We could end up with the public in a panic like they were when the original War of the Worlds came out on radio. The public would freak if they knew the truth about what goes on behind the scenes. I'd love to see reality nursing because I think we need if to help us effect positive change, but I just don't see anyone allowing the truth to be told.

Ive spent many days with my friends from class (i'm still a student) talking about how cool it would be to have a tv show about nursing school. They have those shows for doctors why not nurses? I think it would do a lot to bring people into the profession once they saw that it isn't just "fetching coffee" or "fluffing pillows" as namaste said. It would be really cool to have the show based on like 6 or 7 close friends going through school and trying to balance studying with things like sports, work, and marriages/children. You could twist it as a Drama or even a comedy if you wanted. I agree with Need, I bet we could get 5 seasons just on the things we have on this site.

My friends and I have been keeping pretty good journals just in case someday one of us wants to write a script. Right now its just something to joke and dream about over the many cups of coffee we have to drink, but who knows... with enough support and time it could happen

Remember " MASH"...who all wanted to be just like "hotlips Hoolighan" (my spelling may be off btw!) What a nurse! When our unit is closed, full up and we resemble a MASH unit, scrambling to make emergency spaces....I think of her!

If a "nurse" program that's realistic ever does come out, I'd say we could use some of the stories from the thread "funniest thing a confused pt has told you", and as a previous post said, this website would provide many storylines. However, public probably wouldn't believe half of it! :uhoh3:

VERY good point! funny but true

It's crossed my mind that There could be some sort of "Survivor - Nursing" show. I'm fairly certain it couldn't actually be done from a legal stand-point, but when I watch Survivor I always think it's nothing compaired to nursing school.

Granted my program was horrid. We started with 30 students and graduated 11. Class from 8am - 12 pm, then clinicals from 2pm - 10pm, M-F. Every test that crossed our desk we could not score less than 70% on or we were out! The instructors were also very firm in insisting that we knew the meds we were giving. Daily we could be asked some random fact about a med our patient was on and if we didn't know the answer we failed clinical for the day. We were allowed 2 such mistakes. The third you were out of the program!

They crammed micro, chemistry, A&P, nutrition,... you name it.

If it could be done somehow though, I'd think the survivor should get a full paid scholarship to a reputable nursing school.

Actually there used to be a documentary tv show on discovery health channel called "Nurses" back in 2001. I don't know what happened to it but while it lasted it was really good and showed the real side of nursing. The nurses where not all young and skinny but for the most part they were very experienced. One lady followed even had 20 something years of experience. I wish they would bring that show back. As a student I would watch it.

I caught the last 15 mins to an episode of this show back when I was still in training to be a CNA, I remember they were shadowing an older Pediatric Nurse, I remember in the end she was with this baby and she was singing "To make you feel my love" while she was changing her, and I remember thinking, God, that is what nursing is all about. I wish they would bring that show back!
