I am curious about this too. I work in an ER right now and would like to fill some of my free time and I was curious how to get involved. I know with public schools you can contact the district and offer to sub, but what about private schools? The high school I went to was a private one and I thought about maybe taking a day or two in a private school. Is there some special list to get on for subbing in a private school?
  2. Hey I followed the link to UT Houston..where do it say they have a ENP?!
  3. I too am interested in the ENP. I work at an ER in downtown Dallas and our ENP's see pt's in the same scope as a PA. Ovbiously if things get to sticky then a MD steps in, but they function here just like PA's. I had been looking for an ENP and hadnt found much either. The big difference is that if I go for an ENP I can go back to school now, as opposed to a PA which requires Physics, Genetics, Organic and other classes that I did not take for nursing school. And if they function the same and get the same base pay as a PA..seems silly to be a PA. Though I can see if I were to step out of Dallas that it might be a narrow scope.

Nursin09, Thank you so much, I cant tell you how much just hearing what you went through has helped me. I to decided to not take the antivirals, because the risk was low, and plan on following up with my own GP. But you are right, the whole thing is so freaking scary and all the paperwork, blah! I can guarantee I'll be extremely careful in the future. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me, thank you!! :urck:

It was a pediatric tube, we use those in our ER for peds and pts who we cant get enough blood out of. I was using a transfer device, which is our policy. And I did report it to employee health (hence why I was scared that I may have to take the meds eventually) I was simply looking for some advice on anyones experience on this matter. Really appreciate the help in this scary time in my life, thanks.

I have a quick question. Anyone out there have a run in with a HIV pt and exposure via splash-back on the face? I was collecting blood and there was to much pressure in the tube and the top blew off. I didnt feel anything go into my eye and I have known what that feels like before. I froze and immediately ran to the bathroom. I saw nothing in my eye and had a small pin point drop on my cheek. There was a few tiny dots on my nametag, and that was it. The rest of the splatter was in front of me on the bedside table. I washed my face and outs out very well. Because the pt is confirmed HIV I am afraid that I may have to take the meds as a precaution. But, my exposure risk is really low because my mouth was closed and I saw nothing in my eye. I guess I am just looking for anyone with any experience with this and any advice. They say exposure through mucous membranes is 1 in a 1000. Any thoughts?
  7. I actually did this once when I was fresh out of nursing school. Nothing happened, the pt was fine. And when I talked to my pharmacist about it he said that the reason they say not to mix is because there is not enough research out there that proves its ok to mix. Some cases sugars went crazy others didnt, but it wasnt conclusive. Of course when I told the MD what I had done, he looked at me like I had snakes in my ears, he didnt care, nor did he have any idea what I was talking about. Long story short...dont do it, its considered an error on our part, but dont panic if it accidentally happens. Cheesy, but I remember that Lantus is Lonely and therefor goes in a syringe all by itself!
  8. Wishing that I could have done something else for that patient who is really sick, and really deserves my full attention. Even though I spend most of my time feeding the pain addiction of the local narcotic-addicts. Remembering that I can truly make a difference for the next one....
  9. That would be great to have, my watch is always coming unclasped, especially when I am wearing sterile gloves...go figure!
  10. I have seen urine bright orange but not often seen stool that color. Sometimes people with kidney failure and conditions like pancreatitis secrete some weird stuff in their stool and urine. I would guess it was something he ate, meds he had taken, or some disease process that caused a breakdown of proteins and or enzymes in his stool. But still, very weird! Oh and the orange urine was on a guy going through DT's from ETOH withdrawl.....
  11. Does anyone know anything about being a nurse on a cruise ship? The Pay? The Hours? The Living? Is it really not as great as I think it might be? What kind of patients would we see, what procedures do we do, stuff like that.:onbch:
  12. I agree with most of your comments, I think most lay people wouldnt understand. A reality show would be great, besides the ER one on Discovery ch. Maybe one day it will come true, and I intend on reading about the Nurse and Spy, very interesting!
  13. wearing pajamas to work! In what other profession do you get to roll out of bed throw on comfy pants (scrubs) and tennis shoes and then work for 12 hours in them?
  14. I have a somewhat random question to all you nurses out there. Is it just me, or do you want to see Hollywood come out with a movie that actually displays what we do for a living in the true light. Instead of how we are negatively depicted in shows like ER, Greys Anatomy and movies such as One Flew Over the Cokoos Nest. Maybe its just me, but would a movie that is true to the trials and tribulations that nurses go through interest you? Just curious.....
