I have no idea, we never seem to have enough staff.

I have recently discovered that our hospital is SEVENTY FOUR nurses short, so the hiring process has begun again and new grad classes have been doubled from fifteen to thirty persons for each session.

I know winter is a busy time in most hospitals but I wonder what this means for the future.

I am not much of a speculator, and tend to be a "deal with it as it comes" kind of person so it should be an interesting remainder of the year.

Is anyone else seeing the hiring freezes drop and the pendulum start to swing in a different direction in their facility?

I have been working at a facility for two years as a CNA/Nurse Intern with the promise that I would have a job after graduation. I found out last week that it will not be happening due to hiring freezes for new grads. The only hospital in the area that is hiring new grads has basically promised all of the positions to their nurse interns. They are still accepting applications and holding "interviews" but the positions have already been promised to their interns.

Well then this is a good opportunity to get an interview experience and not be too freaked out about it. :D

We are hiring. But the OR positions only go to those already working at the hospital and are looking to transfer in. Other than that, positions are open in most departments right now.

We are not.

Sadly, we just lost a CNA/HUC that's been on our unit for a couple years, since we had no RN jobs available when she graduated. We had one RN and one LPN that both were day shift that just retired (and another LPN that's been on leave for several months, and likely not returning) and those positions are not being filled. Two CNA's left after they both graduated in December as RN's, no positions for them, either, and their vacated spots were also not filled. We finally got approval for ONE CNA spot that they left, and a HUC had to take it because we're cutting HUC hours . She is a fantastic worker so thank GOODNESS we're not losing her completely, too. We had one 12 hour night shift RN transfer to another unit, and you guessed it...not filling her position EITHER, even though it leaves that weekend an RN short and we are constantly being asked to pick up those shifts or rearrange our usual shifts to cover it.

It's ridiculous, really.

And yes, this is ridiculous. Not fair to the employees at all.

We're currently overstaffed right now. Weird, I know!

My local hospital has 18 openings for nurses, but half of them are per-diem. One is for new grads.

A hospital to the north of me has had Med/surg and ER positions open for months. They also put out an ad for new grads.

One of the buildings where I work just lost the entire evening shift. I don't know if they're replacing anyone.

A hospital south of me is looking for nurses, though they didn't specify units, just shifts (evenings).

The hospital across the lake is hiring experienced nurses.

We never stopped hiring in fact still give sign-on bonuses (NorthEast Texas) seems like everyone wants to go to the bigger cities. Also still hire around 20 new grads each Dec/Jan and June.

I moved to where I am now because I couldn't find a job in the same state where I went to school. People here don't even know about the problem new grads are having finding jobs! It's crazy! There are tons of new grads here from all over the country, and we're still hiring :)

I mentioned that at work the other day and they all looked at me like I was crazy...what do you mean nurses (or new grads) can't find jobs.....they didn't believe me....

We're opening a brand new expansion in May which will increase our bed count considerably and add several new service lines, and filling out one of the shell-space floors in that expansion in November, so there's a ton of RN positions at my facility.

It is so nice to hear there are actually hospitals hiring new grads. Would any of you who posted their hospital is be willing to share the info of the name of your hospital? I am on the brink of losing my house and need a nursing job bad. So any help anyone can provide me with would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

The hospital I just QUIT is hiring new grads but won't let experienced nurses (10+ years) transfer in. It's not just me. I know of two other people with experience trying to get a position in the newly built children's hospital connected to our hospital, but HR just loses our transfer requests as they hire new grads and LPN's. So I have temporarily dropped out of nursing rather than work in an area I dislike with a manager who doesn't like me.
