The nursing school that I want to apply to has 4 pre-reqs: English composition, psychology, nutrition and A&P I. Can you take A&P I without taking general biology first? If I need to take general biology that means being one semester behind and maybe having to wait another full year to apply to nursing school.

I took it without having General Bio. Your school may require it. Be sure to ask. If they do, they may allow you to take it at the same time if you petition.
I did not find it hard to do A & P without general bio. I got A's in both A & P I & II if that helps.
Good luck!

I took it without Biology. I believe I had Bio in high school so believe me when I say I didn't remember a thing. You don't need Bio. A&P goes over the basics in the beginning. Good luck.

You need to look at your school's catalog and find out what pre-requisites there are for taking A&P I. Each school is probably a bit different.

In our school you don't have to take Biology either before taking A&P1. I never had a formal biology class in the US and did great with a very hard teacher. The course is lots of work, be prepared to study your butt off.
Thank you all for the info. English, Psych and Nutrition should all be a breeze, so A&P is the only hurdle. If I don't have to take Gen. Bio, I have a pretty good chance of wrapping up all the pre-reqs by next spring.
Another related question: Those of you who "got away" with taking fewer sciences (i.e. no chemistry or general biology), did you feel at a disadvantage? I love science and wouldn't mind taking the courses but time is a very big factor for me so I'll be taking only the minimum of required courses for an ADN.

I only took Bio 1 and then went on to ace A&P 1&2. Like many have posted above, 85% of bio is reviewed in A&P.
As for sciences, the ones I need for the accelerated BSN were Bio, A&P 1&2, chem 1 and microbio. My last semester before starting nursing school I took A&P 2, chem 1, microbio and one other non-science class. It was a tough squeeze taking 3 sciences each with lab, but well worth it instead of waiting an extra yr to start school.

Like said, check with your school. Mine doesn't require it, but I found that my strong bio background is definately helping. It might just require some extra effort to understand, but definately doable

My bio instructor all but said that our school requires bio as a pre-req for A&P to weed students out before they can get to A&P. He said that almost verbatim. I found the honesty refreshing.

You definatly need to look into what your school requires. Like technically the only bio class I need to take is micro, but to get into micro you need A&PI&II and to get into A&P you need basic bio... and from there it goes.
Our basic bio and chem are equivalents to high school chem and bio, so if you've had the classes within 3 years your exempt, but the one thing I noticed about A&P is since chem and bio were required a lot of info just got skimmed over in lecture but hit hard on the test because the teacher assumed we knew it already.
