A&P without biology?

Published

The nursing school that I want to apply to has 4 pre-reqs: English composition, psychology, nutrition and A&P I. Can you take A&P I without taking general biology first? If I need to take general biology that means being one semester behind and maybe having to wait another full year to apply to nursing school.

Another related question: Those of you who "got away" with taking fewer sciences (i.e. no chemistry or general biology), did you feel at a disadvantage? I love science and wouldn't mind taking the courses but time is a very big factor for me so I'll be taking only the minimum of required courses for an ADN.

Intro to Chemistry is one of the requirements for ADN at my school. I started out with Chem and I am glad that I did because it definitely helped make things easier in A&P and now in Micro.

If Chem is not required I wouldn't worry about it and just take the classes as you are planning. A&P will be the most time consuming of the four that you have mentioned, study hard for that class and good luck

Personally, for me, I am glad that I took Bio and Chem first. It helped me to understand this new language called science. Please understand, I was in my mid 30's when I went back to school.. had biology/chemistry years before in high school. I have a 4.0, and owe it all to my bio and chem classes... first sections of micro and AP were a breeze for me (first sections... then had to get down to business of studying)

Yes, it set me back a semester, but I made up for it by taking a summer class. I also think it saved me a whole heck of tears!

Good luck! Enjoy the journey!

Medical Terminology might also be a good one to take before any of the hard core science classes..... it's just a suggestion, teachers at our school preach this every semester. I had covered Medical Terminology when I went through a Certificate program for Medical Secretary years ago and it helped me now years later

No, I havent noticed a difference YET in nursing classes (only done w/ fundamentals). I had AP and Cellular biology and have done just fine in nursing classes (taking Micro now and think it will be VERY useful in N. classes).
