other ideas (posted in other threads):

  • make your own flashcards!
  • if you are not familiar with (or have forgotten) chem, check out an into to chemistry book
  • utilize your school's study lab, or open lab times, if offered.
  • take pictures during labs!

Okay everyone...i just walked in the door and I came straight to the computer to tell you about my absolutely AWESOME/AMAZAING/WONDERFUL proffessor. He's from Puerto Rico, an older gentleman...loves the computer and is the director of the Biology Study Lab. He reminds me of Speedy Gonzales from the cartoons...he's very animated and very comical...he wants us to learn and have fun and not be so stressed that we hate his class. He is lecture based, dry lab, and wet lab....dry lab is just to the bio study lab and working on the computer....like I said earlier he loves computers therefore makes programs for us to learn with...pretty neat...we already experience one today...not bad at all....

His grading system is probably one of the best I've every seen...it is as follows :

4 tests

1 final

3 lab tests

12 quizzes.

there will be essays on all tests which are all extra credit...if you make a 85 on the test and answer 2 essays that are worth 5 each your test grad is now a 95. if the average of the 12 quizzes is better than one of your tests, then your quiz average replaces that test. if on the final you make between a 80-89 he will drop the lowest test grade out of the 4, if you make a 90-100 on the final he will drop your 2 lowest test grades. if you have a 89 as your final grade and only have missed no more than 2 classes and you have participated in clas and have not been tardy, he will give you the A.

the other way to get 10 points extra credit is to donate plasma, or volunteer for 6 hours at a local kids/teenage study place that we have here...

I wan really impressed with him....although he talks fast and w/ a little bit of an accent...i do have the upper hand beings my husband is from Mexico and has the same tendencies to talk fast and w/ a very small accent...so needless to say love the guy.

My other profs seemed really awesome as well.....

Here's to a great start in the new semester.....hope everyone elses day was good....

Congrats!! That is fabulous. We have no extra credits and we are on a 6 point scale. 100-94 = A, 93-86 = B, 85-78=, 77-70=D, 69-0=F, and no extra credits. Boy am I "Greens with envy".

after being out of school so long I was praying for something good....I orginally had a another prof but dropped him like a hot potato after i heard so really horrific things from students and other profs...I'm praying all will go smoothely

Specializes in med-surg.

I start my class next week. I'm a bit nervous about how much bio/chem I should already know for this. It's been almost 12 years since I graduated high school and I only took physics in college. I'm reviewing some books (Chem for Dummies, etc.). Any other suggestions?

Which prof have you chosen this time, I thought Fardal was your teacher. He isn't all that bad.....not as bad as the one I had. Who is the new prof. Good luck!

Keep me informed I'm being nosy....hopefully I'll see you soon in the Bio Bldg.

I went with Torres, a spot in his class came open and I jumped on it. He's the director of the Biology learning lab....hilarious guy

Hard????? he pretty much gives you what you need to know...there was a girl in there who had him last semester who had to drop b/c of family problems and said he was amazing...i heard bad things about my previous...that he jumped around a lot, doesn't provide notes, doesn't really lecuture out of the book ect....after the first day i'm really pleased w/ this guy....a friend of mine is in fardel's, so i'll wait and see what she says....and I'll keep you updated

I wish you well with Torres. I guess I had such a bad experience with my prof that when I met the Fardal gang, I really envied them :p They all had such an easier time and were pleased with him. I studied with them because most students quickly dropped my class and no one was left to study with in the end. You sound like you will handle him alright.

We had our first lecture today and also our first lab. I have 2 chapters to read fo lectue and I just spent 4 hours writing out notes and flash cards for my a lab quiz on Wednesday. This class is going to be VERY time consuming!

How is everyones else's class going?

Hello fellow A&P 1 takers! I am extremely nervous about this semester. Along with A&P I am taking English 1 and Nutrition. Obviously my main focus is going to be A&P. I just took bio and chem back to back so hopefully that will help. I hear A&P is a "weeding out" class. YIKES :uhoh21:

I have been mentally preparing myself for the dissections and the hard work to come.

Good Luck....we are in this together.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Hospice.

So far so good.

Lab:

We have to learn the origins and insertions on our own and then say them orally to the instructor. I did the first two tables (muscles of facial expression and muscles of mastication) for her yesterday and will do the third (muscles that move the head) and possibly fourth (pectoral girdle) tomorrow. Nobody else in class had done any of them yet. I figure that I can complete them in 5 weeks of I do 2 or 3 a week.

I also have a lab quiz next week on body cavities, regions, sinuses, etc. It is also one of those learn on your own things and doesn't look too bad.

Then there's the skeletal test in which each of us will go over the entire skeleton and state the names of the bones, processes, foramens, etc. Also learn on your own.

The instructor has us start out with the muscles and bones first to get them out of the way and says the rest of the class will not be as difficult. I hope so.

Lecture:

We are starting out with same stuff we covered at the beginning of Bio: Cellular respiration, pH, cell structure, etc. (The instructor calls it baby bio-chem.) Again, she starts out with the most difficult material on purpose to get it out of the way and give us some confidence that the rest of the semester is do-able.

Well I had my first class monday and my lab last, night, I will have to say I LOVE IT. My teacher is GREAT, she's funny and teaches us in a fun way. She said that she's never been one to be able to memorize things, so she doesn't teach that way. We have our first quiz next wed, and a test on the following monday on chapter 1. We will have a test after each chapter (I think that's what she said) we're only covering the first 12 chapters this semester and she said we will have many, many quizes when we get to the bones. All and all I think I'm going to like this class, It's going to be hard, but i just don't feel soooooooo stressed out which is GREAT:wink2:

I posted these links in the A&P2 thread, but thought that A&P1 could use them too. They are the links my instructor gave us as resources for A&P2, but a lot of them cover A&P1 stuff too!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the links my A&P teacher has given us for the class. Most of them look good, and different from the list posted here!

Virtual Anatomy Lab http://www.sunyniagara.cc.ny.us/val/valindex.html

From Niagara Community College. Searchable, user friendly site. Includes some cat dissection views. Great resources, links for each body system addressed.

LUMEN Gross Anatomy Site http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/Med...em/learnit.htm

HistoWeb http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/medi...tomy/histoweb/

From the University of Kansas. Outstanding for learning tissue types and subtypes.

LUMEN Histology Site http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/Med...to_frames.html

Fantasic resource for learning tissue types, subtypes, and locations.

Neuroscience for Kids - Cranial Nerves http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/cranial.html

from Washington University of St. Louis. Great diagrams and study guide for learning the 12 pairs of cranial nerves.

Physiology Animations http://www.uh.edu/sibs/tutorial/ap2.htm#urinary

Some are interactive; from many body systems and processes covered in this class; sponsored by University of Texas at Houston

Blood Cell Histology http://www.unomaha.edu/hpa/blood.html

From the University of Omaha, Nebraska - identification, information about formed elements of blood. Be sure to use numbers presented in the text as the "authority" for CBC & differential counts.

Cardiac Cycle - Mechanical Activity and Blood Flow http://www.thinkquest.org/library/we...a.html?C003758

OUTSTANDING resource for anatomy and physiology related to the cardiac cycle. I do not recommend viewing this with a dial-up connection, there are many large files and animations to run.

HyperHeart 2 - from the University of Utah Medical School Library http://medlib.med.utah.edu/kw/pharm/HyperHeart2.htm

Requires shockwave software download. Be sure to stop the animation and go frame by frame for a more detailed explanation of events. This is a wonderful tool for "putting it all together" as it pertains to the cardiac cycle.

Nervous System from UW-LaCrosse http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/aplab/Table_...07/lab_07.html

Offers diagrams of brain and other nervous system models. Excellent tutorial and pictures of sheep brains

Blood Types Tutorial http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human...pes/Intro.html

Fromt the University of Arizona. Great tutorial, review of blood typing and genetics.

Are You My Blood Type? Game http://www.givelife2.org/games/matchgame.asp

From the American Red Cross. Very catchy game to review blood donation rules. Be sure to read the directions before you begin!
