A&P 1: The Spring '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Ok, no one has started this yet, so I guess I will. I start A&P I on January 18th, lab and lecture.

Here are a few good websites I have found...some are basic, some may be more indepth than your instructor asks for.....BUT it gives you a little more to look over before class starts next month! :) ....Never forget the website for your actual book too!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU

hey all!

Just wanted to say hi and catch up. I've taken another lecture exam and had the histology lab exam today. Both went really well. We've started skeletal system- i feel behind cuz it's been a crazy week.

Hubby went in to the ER late sunday night- turned out to be kidney stones. They sent him home hopped up on morphine! He's been trying to pass it all week- they think it's moved down and should be out soon. they really wanted to avoid surgery. he's been on percocet and phenergan and feeling terrible with pain plus he's got a cold. I have a cold too-yucky! So it's been difficult to keep up with him, kids, and studying. Welcome to the real world huh?!

I wish I had more time to read here and check out the links--maybe tonight after kids go to bed. Right now my 5yo needs yogurt- and I've gotta go soon and pick up sister.

sounds like everyone's doing well--keep it up!!

BTW--we had to draw the cell and parts plus describe and draw mitosis. AND write and essay over protein synthesis plus 40 multiple choice/matching. FUN FUN

more later........

Okie2: Sorry to hear about your hubby, and your cold. :( My husband went had at least one kidney stone.....5 morphine shots! Luckily he passed it when he went "potty in the containor" in the ER. lol

I told him if he ever wanted a third child, he'd have to have another kidney stone. .....needless to say we only have two children. lol

I'm glad your exams are going well.

nursestudentin05: Thanks for the website, it is a good one. :)

Did two exams this week, second set of exams for both classes. One for lecture and one for lab. Since I'm recovering from a cold, my brain feels like it's running at slow speed. Lab was ok, 92/100 points. We'll see how I did on the lecture exam next week. I know I got between 3-5 wrong. The good news was that our instructor said this section is probably the hardest. We tested on cells, tissues and the skin. The tissues is what really messed me up. Argh. Never figured out the differences between all the connective tissues.

But if you need to remember the mitotic phases, its Pee MAT (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase). Think of what a puppy pee's on.:rotfl:

LOL luckily, we skipped the chemical, and cells chapters!

Well today we had a lab quiz over tissues and I choked. We have a four day weekend until the other half of the test, I plan to study a bunch!

Sorry to hear that. Good luck on your future exams.

Anything impeticular, or did you just go blank?

Popping in to say thanks to all who've posted links to various useful sites, even if I did find some of them too late  .

Fun2Care, I don't know my grade yet for the lab exam but I think I did okay.

I have a written exam on Tuesday, 100 multiple choice questions, covering everything from Cells to Joints. We're using Marieb and I think it's a fantastic text.

Good luck to all who are having exams this next few days and weeks. Hang in there people, we'll make it!!

I got my result back for my test, I got 78.3 :uhoh3: I hate grades like that.

Oh, well... At least I see that I can do it :)

Almost a B....keep pushing! :) Good luck to you.

YEAH! Hubby passed the evil stone!! It's big and jagged with crystals--mean looking. No wonder he was screaming in pain! Took 5 days!

His cold is getting better and mine is gone.

Just wanted to give an update--

That's great! .....wishing you both health, and wishing you good study vibes! lol

How much have you done on the skeletal system in your class? I am just overwhelmed at all the memorization of the cranial terms, appendicular, etc. There is so much! I am familiar with just naming the terms on a skeleton, but when I get to the deeper level, all the bone markings (which I actually have memorized) it's just so much. And I know that there will be some of this on our midterm, but I have to memorize it all, because even if there are only 20 questions on it, i want to be able to get them right!

How in depth are your memorizations for say, the external anatomy of the skull?

Becca

I just wanted to give you all a word of encouragement. I've been an A&P tutor in the past, and I just want you to know that knowing the bones well will help you in learning the muscles--especially the insertion and origins, cuz that's what all those little knobs 'n' things on bone are for :)

It will also help because some muscles are named for their attachments.

By the way, a hint on muscles: there are three things you need to know about a muscle, usually:

insertion, origin, action.

It's not quite exact, but most times if you can remember 2 of the three you can figure out the 3rd. Origins are always on "stationary" bones and insertions are usually attached to the bone that will be moved. In order to do this, though, it will be important for you to know which side of the bones the origins and insertions are on: if you know a muscle originates on the anterior humerus and inserts onto the anterior forearm, then contraction will cause the elbow to bend. If both ends are attached to the posterior parts of the bones they will cause the elbow to straighten.

Just to review:

1. If you know where the origin and insertion is, think about what happens to the bones when the muscle contracts.

2. If you know what the origin and action are, then think of where the muscle would have to attach on the other (usually distal) side of the joint--what bone?

3. If you know the action and insertion, then you think about where the muscle would have to attach in a stable location in order for the action to occur.

Hope this helps.

Good luck to all of you!!!
