Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread for A&P II. Does anyone know if there's a process to request a thread being made sticky?

Has anyone been getting a jump start on class by reading ahead? I found my Prof's powerpoint notes online, so I'm making some flash cards as well :)

Peace,

Cathie

My AP class is going pretty well! I am enjoying it. We've completed the special senses and the endocrine system and been tested over both. We have quizzes every course period and been doing well with those. We have had two lab exams. They are fun. It sounds a lot like yours. We just have a list and then an exam date. We kinda go at our own pace. Our next one is over the cardiovascular system. YIKES! My teacher is awesome. I just love her and she makes everything so interesting. We have a test on Tuesday over the lecture portion of the cardiovascular system. I am in the swing of things...well as much as you can be, lol. How is Micro going Catzy?

doesn't it make a world of difference to have a great teacher? I am loving both of mine this semester. I am loving micro and AP so much work but I figure its gearing me up for the incredible work load we will have in nusring.

hey guys. I just have a quick question for you...I took anatomy in college about 3 years ago. Im back in school to get my nursing degree, but I have to take A&P II. So, im wondering if I absolutely need to re-take A&P I in order to do well in A&P II? Any opinions would be helpful!!!

Thanks,

Maria

mdg,

Especially if you still have your notes, and if you did well enough the first time, I wouldn't bother. Do you still know the names of most of the bones and muscles? Do you have a basic understanding of cell anatomy (the microbiology review chapter)? How about histology? Do the names of different types of epithelial cells sound familiar (simple/stratified, squamous/cuboidal/columnar)? Otherwise there isn't a lot of A&P II that seems to refer back to I, at least at my school. They assume a basic knowledge, but it's mostly learning the systems that we didn't cover in I. If you were lost the first time, have no notes/book to refer back to, or received a low grade, you might want to retake it. Send a quick e-mail to the A&P II professor too, he/she might have an opinion.

I was in the same situation... took anatomy a few years ago at a cc in a different state than where I live now. The university I now attend does A&P together rather than separately the way my old school did it. My advisor said that I can just jump into A&PII and do fine but I felt that I would be missing out on some areas of physiology by never having taken A&PI. I certainly did not want to re-take anatomy either! And, I know how important it is in nursing to know physiology, so I decided to look into cc's in my area and enroll in one of their physiology courses. I have to commute an hour each way in order to take this class, but in the end I felt that it was worth it for me to have the entire picture of physiology rather than just half.

ETA: I just read a different post by you and misunderstood. I thought you just took anatomy only but I now read that it was actually A&PI... in that case disregard my .02 cents above :)

I have never heard of a school choosing people who have merely taken courses there over a more qualified person with better academic standing. That's not fair at all, especially to people who have worked harder than the people who just took the classes there with mediocre grades.

I myself have worked very hard, dreading having to compete with people with 4.0's. Only thing is that I got my first Bachelor's at Johns Hopkins in Neuroscience, so I'm hoping my 3.0 means less from that . I've applied to mostly New Jersey schools nearby with an Accelerated Second degree program, finishing up A&P II now...the LAST of the pre-reqs!!! Doing pretty well so far, but there's also only been one lecture exam.

Just because I didn't get a 4.0 doesn't mean I didn't work hard. I busted my tail off to get good grades. Minimums are set for a reason. Everyone is not going to get a 4.0 As long as I am above the minimun requirements, that's what matters. If that's the case then each school should require no less than a 4.0.

It can't be stressed enough that a good teacher is half the battle. It made all the difference in my classes. I had one terrible teacher for A&P1 and one terrific teacher for A&P2....it was a difference like day and night.

I can't agree more...a good teacher makes all the difference. I LOVED AP1 mostly because we had such a wonderful, personable, organized, and fair teacher. Almost the entire class signed up for AP2 this semester with him. Unfortunately, he took a different job and we were stuck with a new prof.

It has been a nightmare! We started with 24 people and are now down to just 9 (3 more dropped just this week)! Every class has been some sort of drama, or argument. Everyone is miserable. The teacher is VERY unorganized and forgets to bring materials weekly (either tests or handouts or her brain). Her lectures are all over the place, jumping from system to system. Some students talked to the dean about their concerns and when she found out she had a huge blowup in class yelling at us all and saying that she was basically "going to make things as hard as she could now". She had a second blow up last week, in regards to an email a student sent her, addressing their concerns. I dread class. It makes me sick to my stomach. I used to really enjoy AP. Now all I want is for May 10th to get here!

I was so close to dropping last week, but decided that I will not let her win! I am too stubborn I suppose. I told my husband that maybe God is testing me! LOL! Lord knows nursing school will not be a breeze and we all know we will have patients that will make us nuts. So I must get through this awful course and learn from the experience.

Best part...I am actually pulling an A so far.

I am not one of her favored students, so it feels good to at least make good grades in spite of all that.

This too, shall pass.

Minimums are set for a reason. However, for me (I am nearing a 3.6)someone who has a 3.7 or higher did better than me. Likely worked harder than I did. I certainly would understand them beating me out. I have gotten all my great grades now and the ones that lessened my grades were when I was a kid and didn't focus as much. I truly believe that someone can have a lesser GPA and know more but I don't think that those who have a lower GPA should just naturally get in b/c they have a geographical advantage over others.

Please don't think that just b/c you don't have a 4.0 you didn't work hard. That was never meant as such. I just feel, as I think you would do, as though its a bit unfair and hard to take to have someone get in who is a full letter grade below you (as it is in the case of my 3.6 and the minimum 2.75). I want everyone who has the heart for nursing and works hard to get into their programs they are applying to. Hugs to you hun! We might be in the same Nursing class. lol.

Does anyone have the PPT slides for Guyton & Hall's "Textbook of Medical Physiology"?

Specifically Chapters 20-23

I am returning to college after 8 years break....LOL....taking A&PII spring quater.....Any pointers or suggestions to help me out....

Hi Paula,

I am in sort of the same situation as you! I took A&P I five years ago, and this semester I am taking A&P II. It seems strange. It takes time to get back into the mindset of being a student again, but if you focus on your goal (i.e., becoming a nurse) it helps.

Good luck with your class!
