A&P, Chemistry, and Nutrition - Too much?

Published

Hi.

This fall I am currently taking A&P 1, Nutrition and Chemistry. This is 11 credit hours. I go to school, 4 days a week, Tuesday being my only long day. I'm not working and have no kids/spouse. So basically my whole day is free after school.

Today before A&P I was talking with a few people from my class, and one girl remarked that I shouldn't be taking the classes I am because chemistry is so hard, and I should drop it. It really made me feel like crap, as if I've bitten off more than I could chew. I know I should just ignore her, but for the last week I have been worrying myself that I am doing too much. So far it seems like I have been overreacting and it's not that bad, but it could get worse. I just wish she would have shut up, UGh.:crying2:

Has anyone taken these classes together and been fine, and not stressed out?

Thanks. She kind of put me back in the dumps.

sorry i took forever to post...it looks like someone sent the link. if you have the human anatomy & physiology book by marieb, when you go online with your student access code, 'getting ready for a&p' is available thru e-book on that website as well. i am not sure what book your instructor is using. good luck hun!

I think its completely manageable. Outside of school, you have no other commitments, right? You can definitely do this.

I found A&P was mostly about memorization (yes, there was some synthesis required, but it was heavy on memorization). Nutrition was moderately difficult, but not as hard as A&P or Chem. For me, Chemistry took more "brain time" in terms of understanding the material, learning how to balance equations, etc... (and math was easy for me so it was not a math issue, just a Chemistry issue). The labs for Chem took the most time for me. I took a two semester Chem sequence that was for non-Chemistry, but some other science (like Bio) major. It was non-calculus based Freshman Chemistry. My school also had a general chem for nursing majors which was a one semester, not as intensive, version of that class. It did not have labs. Depending on what your Chem course is, it may be rough, or it may be easier than the A&P. Its definitely workable though.

I would make sure to allot more time than you think you will need, esp for Chemistry, at first. Sometimes you need extra time to wrap your brain around things and let it sink in til you get the "aha" moment like Neo in The Matrix, and sometimes that needs to be done over a series of days, instead of four hours all at once. I found this to be true also for the "Integrated Organic and BioChem for Nursing Students" that I took.

I hope this made sense.

Good luck!

Here it is! I actually found it at Goodwill and have read quite a bit of it, though I'm not taking A&P until January.

Sorry to start a new tangent post but I was wondering if any of you have any other recommendations on books as study guides for Microbiology, A&P, Chemistry, Nutrition, Biology?

I can start a new thread too if I'm not following the proper allnurses board posting rules.

Ignore her! I'm taking Anatomy, Chemistry, Micro and Nutrition this semester. A couple of my classmates have looked at me wide-eyed when I told them my schedule, but this is actually turning out to be one of my better semesters. I took Chemistry over the summer and got a D. I'm retaking it with a different professor -- who actually takes time to answer questions and doesn't make us feel like idiots for asking -- and I'm acing it. I'm not really doing anything different as far as study habits go, except, perhaps, I am much more competitive this semester b/c applications are due in a couple of weeks. I live with my fiance, don't have a job and don't have any kids, and I have adequate free time between classes to study. Someone told me that Anatomy was really hard, but I'm acing it so far. Of course, we haven't gotten to the bones yet lol. Anyways, don't listen to others' negativity. If you're dedicated and make every effort you can to do well, then you'll be fine.

i took A&p1, chemistry, world religons, english 201 all at once and did ok! You are going to have to work pretty hard, but at my last school we were expected to take our anatomys and chemistry (all 3) together to finish pre nursing in a year!

You can do it! 11 credit hours is basically nothing! Most schools start counting a student full time at 12, and most students take between 15 and 18. I'm taking 17 credits this semester (only 1 science though, A&P).

I'm taking those 3 and Intro to Psych right now so I understand what your going through! Make sure you give yourself a break with all the studying!

KIT if you'd like!

ouch, that sucks to you big time. Did you drop the class? do not drop the class.

I have no kid/spouse like you, nor do I work, and I also have so much free time. I'm just a mere 19-year-old dude. I have 19 credit hours on me, and it is pressureful; however, I always think about my motivations, and what drives me for success despite those people that put me(or try to) down. You should take it to the max, and bite off more that you can chew if you are up for it like me. screw those people that think you can't do much. hell, I have A&P 1 and 2 this semester along with my last prereqs and general education for my BSN. on top of that, I tutor classmates for fun out of my heart. non-paid. Anyhow, take advantage of your free time, because once you don't have free time, you'll be missing it more; otherwise, what a bummer man...

Nutrition for me was like a bird course. I regret not taking it online and adding another class.
